You have to trade something of value when acquiring good players

Oilers don't even pick up the phone. Nurse is a top 5 dman right now for a failing winger and 4th liner Lazar no where near what Nurse would fetch at least a first has to be in the deal.

Uhhh lauzon is a defensemen that has played on the top pair this year. Don’t know where you saw lazar.

Nurse is not a top 5 d man. He is not a top 10 d man. I’d have to take a look, but I’d be surprised if he was a top 20 d man.

Whoops looked like Lazar to me lol. Nurse is at least a top 10 dman he leads defensemen with goals, and is someone everyone wants on their team. Multiple 40+ point seasons, even Norris contention this year.

Funny that EDM fans were trying to trade him in every other ACGM this past off-season. Meanwhile I had to sit there and defend that he was actually a really good d-man and EDM would be crazy to trade him.

Well, sadly this year it’s pretty hard to compare players based on a divisional schedule. For example i think there are zero good teams in the north, so I’m not giving much credit for performances up there.

@Bruinsforlife you better start a gradual rebuild by bringing young talents to the team and placing them on the same lines with veteran players.

Well, he’s gone in a year. Trading him would be pretty smart.

Oh cmon. You can’t say that. It’s edmonton man. Free agents sprint from edmonton as fast as they can. No trade clauses were invented to block trades to edmonton. Ya playing with McDavid is sick, and in the summers i hear its pretty nice up there, but the winters are brutal and it’s been made abundantly clear that guys don’t want to live up there during hockey season.

You can have a hunch he’ll re-sign, but to say it’s for sure is legit insane given the history of that city/team.

Out of curiosity, what do you think it would take to keep him in edmonton? If you think he’s a top five d man you’re figuring something like 8x11?

Boston already has a 3rd line center they are paying 5M so they won't sign Danault. He's an ok player but Krejci even at 35 is still a better one. Hopefully a 1 year commitment to him at 5-6M. Edmonton is not doing that deal to trade Nurse so DeBrusk stays which leaves no room for Perreault.

A 26 year old dman playing 25 minutes per night in all situations, on a 20 goal 50 point pace over 82 games with a +20 doesn't get traded for a struggling middle six winger, 2nd round pick, and a potential top 4 defenseman. Nurse seems completely comfortable playing in Canada and is likely to sign a long term deal after this bridge. He'll likely get something in the $7-8 mil range with term. I wouldn't call him a top 5 Dman (may get the odd 5th place Norris vote this year) but guys like Nurse in their prime don't get traded from playoff teams for spare parts.

Well if it takes 7x7 to keep him an market that always has to overpay players to get/keep them there, that kind of says what you think about him as a player. It doesn’t say top 5. It doesn’t say top 10. It doesn’t say top 20.

If you think he’s that good the price is over 10.

In fairness, he’s a pending UFA in this deal.

Teams tend to look at a players career rather than one season playing in a horrid division in a weird pandemic season.

Bruins fans what are your thoughts on a Graves for DeBrusk swap. Similar cap hits and opens up that Top 6 spot for Hall next season guaranteed.

The Pacific next year is looking weaker than the North is this year. Oilers more likely looking to add than subtract. In my opinion, Nurse is more valuable than RNH and if they only have cap for one, they're keeping Nurse. The relationship between the Oilers and Nurse seems good, usually when a player plans on bolting in free agency there's a little more smoke in advance. The question with Nurse was always whether he's a first pairing or second pairing D because Klefbom was always playing higher up the line-up. With Klefbom out, Nurse has put up good enough numbers that a team will be offering him first pairing money. As long as the Oilers make a competitive offer, I doubt Nurse walks.

There are two things you seem to be ignoring.
1. You say stuff like 20 goal 50 point pace or whatever, but that’s only happened in this once goofy season where he only plays against the division. For career? 8 goal pace. 23 point pace. 22 minutes a night. And that’s including his stats from this outlier season. No team looks at him and says, “oh, well clearly this guy is a 50+ point guy.”
2. You can’t deny the oilers have a long history of players running out of town the second they can. I think the confidence that this guy will buck the trend is a little naive. It might happen, but i think he has to be a favorite to leave.

A more accurate way to look at his numbers would be to look at the last 3 seasons (197GP) which would only weight this season half of the previous 2. Taking a look at his whole career includes his early seasons playing 3rd pairing at 15 minutes per night, definitely skews statistics downward to an unrealistic level. Based on that, he would be a 12 goal, 43 point Dman which is upper level production. In the last 82 game season, 30Dman hit that mark so on average 1 per team (which included Nurse).

Having lived in the area and seeing guys like Petry and Schultz run out of town, I can confidently say the average's fans opinion on Nurse is nowhere in the same ballpark and he is not being run out of town. It is still his choice whether he stays, but he comes across as a team first player that is part of the core and is not looking to run elsewhere as long as they pay him what is fair.

You misunderstand. The players are not run out of town. They run out of town. It is not a market players want to be. That’s undeniable. Nothing to do with the city, a lot to do with barely seeing the sun during hockey season.
