Why do we have to pay Seattle to take Foegle? Or is it just so they don't take Bean or Nedeljkovic?

    A. We protect Foegele over McGinn
    B. We protect Ned
    C. We are paying someone to take Foegele that is just silly
    D. Giving Svech 4 years, taking him to UFA is a mistake. This is glitch on this site

Bean isn’t worth protecting. Skjei is more of an asset at this point. If Seattle takes him, they take him

I agree with all of this. If you're re-signing Dougie though, I'd imagine Seattle will expect something in return for taking that Skjei contract (Yes, he's good, but if you want to make space, you need them to take him). I read somewhere (I can't remember where) that Seattle was expecting 1st round picks at the bare minimum for taking on money, which doesn't surprise me since there should be a lineup of cap-strapped teams looking to shed.

I think we protect Skjei, Slavin and Pesce. Risk Seattle signing Dougie but then sign him afterwards.

The money savings comes from having cheaper contracts on the roster. Martinook is a below average rated player. the canes can keep him around for his leadership / personality but it should be for much less than 2 million. McGinn is generally the same but not as much savings on the next deal. Buying out Gardiner is a possibility to about save 2.7 million in cap space. DW and Dundon understand the value of a draft pick and would be willing to spend not to lose a 1st rounder to get Seattle to take Gardiner.

They can take 1 player, read again-just 1 player. Much better to just let them take a player and move on. Absurd to pay to roster players to them to have them not take a rookie goaltender or defensively challenged D.

If Seattle takes Dougie, he's probably gonezo. If he hits the open market, someone is going to give him a boatload of cash. Honestly, losing him would sting for you guys, but probably not the worst thing.

Depends on what you want for payroll flexibility I suppose.

    True.

I am of the mind they’re going to lose Hamilton regardless to ufa. So, I think they’ll be using Hamilton’s current $5-6M salary slot to bring in a replacement. I also think Foegele will likely be re-signed over Martinook and Paquette. If you lose Martinook’s $2M and Paquette’s $1.6M, you have plenty to give Foegele a raise and also slot in another player or 2 on ELCs.

I’d rather keep 3/4 of a strong top 4 together in Skjei, Slavin and Pesce vs Slavin, Pesce and Bean, who is no where near ready to play 20mins a night.
Put it this way, I’m more comfortable losing Hamilton and Bean than I am with them losing Hamilton and Skjei. Replacing 1 top 4 D is a heck of a lot easier than 2.

We have some avenues to consider. If Hamilton becomes their star to sign then so be it. There are a couple of RH Defenders worth signing to smaller deals. Barrie would be okay. Or we can go complete shutdown and get a Larsson or Savard type. With the money saved, could do an 8 year deal with Svech now or still bridge him. We could use the savings to go get another strong offensive player. Options are there.

I think that's a solid way of looking at it. I agree that Hamilton is likely leaving via FA. I can't imagine Seattle would risk a pick on him anyway though.

The only thing I'd be particularly worried about is if Bean turns into Shea Theodore 2.0 (Sad Ducks fan here...).

I wouldn’t be opposed to them sending a bone to Francis to take Gardiner, but I doubt that would be cheap. It’d probably be cheaper in the long run to just buy Gardiner out. (Which is also very unlikely)

Yeah, I honestly think Savard for $5 or so by 3, and then having the flexibility to do go long term with Svech (plus Necas next year, and hopefully keeping Trochek) isn't the worst idea in the world.

That’s a risk you take I guess. I’d hate to see Bean excel too after being picked up by Francis, but after watching him for 2 years in Charlotte and his 30 or so game NHL career so far, I’m taking the under on Bean. I just don’t see top 4 D in him.

But who knows, I’m sure the Canes front office has a better handle on it than I do. I do think that the Skjei acquisition was a bit of a hedge on Hamilton potentially leaving so I don’t think they will willingly risk losing him, unless they know that by losing him and his cap hit they’ll be able to keep Hamilton.

Over the past few weeks, Skjei has been excellent. Very steady on D and his offensive game has finally come around. He’s tailor-made for Brind’Amour’s style of play.
