MTL Rebuilding New Plan

Created by: seanross
Team: 2021-22 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 20, 2021
Published: Apr. 20, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Montreal isn’t going no where with mediocrity, they have good player, but none of them are elite. They need to start from scratch, keeping only key young players.
1. Trade Shea Weber to any team for a small price. Take cap room back and some pick. Give Gallagher the C.
2. Draft in 2021 at pick 18 Sasha Pastujov. Pastujov is a pure offensive player playing with the USNTP. He’s currently leading the team in pts.
3. Trade Toffoli. I know we just signed him, but a 28yo with this contract could fetch us a pretty big return. We want prospect and picks
4. Trade older players for picks
5- The fourth line is fast gritty and young. They gain experience after playing a good season together at laval

I actually like this, I think... Thats a big price to pay for SEA to take on Price tho. Plus, Price would ave to waive in order to be exposed... Not likely but possible depending on the rest of the season. If the team keeps on losing and miss the playoffs, then Im sure theres a chance that Price would rather be close to home.

I disagree with you. Montreal is a middle of the pack team in the league, and they have a whole bunch of picks in this upcoming draft. Caufield looks great in the AHL, Allen will probably get claimed by Seattle so they'll need a backup, and they still need that elite number one centre. They're a few pieces away from being a serious contender. Check out my team https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/2353667

the blues definitely wont swap Scandella for weber, they don't have near the cap space to do that

Yup. Tofolli is great, but pens are no longer in the business of trading futures.

Personally, I think moving Price is a bad idea.

Best case scenario would be that Price recovers his game and plays great for another team and we get to be jealous that he's not still doing that in Montreal.

Worse case (and probably the more likely scenario) Price plays a year or two somewhere else then retires, causing the Habs to get hit with his recapture penalty right around the time guys like Suzuki, KK, Romanov, Poehling and Caufield are hitting their primes (and needing contracts).

I could be wrong, but in my opinion, the Habs are better off hanging on to Price and hoping he either gets his game back or just having a very expensive backup for the next 5 years.

Moving Weber would be tricky and the Habs will likely have to give up a decent prospect to make it happen. Might be easier to do next year if Weber can bounce back a bit next season when the schedule isn't so insane.

Unloading Weber alone is huge pun intended

They're left with 26M$ in cap space lol

    That's absolutely brilliant

If this is viable it's absolute genius

Does anyone here appreciate that this is -very overtly stated- a rebuilding plan and then you can build from there: very easily thankfully given everything

They could actually elite players to big money

    So many options

My only goal was to get more picks and prospect + some cap room. It suck to say but we need to loose to get top prospect. The draft is almost the only place where you can gain elite players. We need those

Its not that of an overpayment. Toffoli has lot of value. 28yo signed for just 4.5m and has already 21goals. I think team would be able to give a late first and a prospect, if foligno and savard got first

Exactly. It feels like a lot of folks struggle to accept such sobering realities but the reward is so wonderful. Hopefully it's improving.

Maybe Detroit accepts. Every other team rejects with extreme prejudice.

With the market we have now there is a lot of thing possible. In my head if Savard or Foligno can fetch a first, Toffoli can surely fetch a 1rst and a prospect, maybe not pitts but on other teams. That was not a exact plan where I want the player to be traded but more of general idea of a rebuilding. I don’t know of chiarot could get us a 2cnd but scandella got us one so I can expect at least a high 3rd. Also for weber, a team could manage cap space to take him. If he retires all of his cap goes to NSH so its not that abd. The only one I don’t see happening is the price trade but ots a armchair gm so🤷‍♂️
