Avs Off-Season

Created by: JasonianOne
Team: 2021-22 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 20, 2021
Published: Apr. 20, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If Johnson waives his NMC, I wouldn't buy him out. I wouldn't sign Nemeth consequently and probably couldn't afford Coleman (still not sure $3M would land him). I would probably look at O'Connor on the fourth line and make Bowers the 13th forward.

Salary Dump. Could be any team and different draft picks depending on the market in the offseason. Compher just seems like a good stop gap for Detroit until there younger talent steps in. If he plays well, they flip him in a year or two at the trade deadline.

as much as I would love to see all this, I think you are still 1m light on Landy and Grubauer. Landeskog will be 7m and Grubauer will be able to command 6m on the open market. 5.5m and term like 6 years probably gets it done. With the recentl goalie signings this season, Grubauer is going to command top market.

Hyman and Coleman are not needed, 1 of them sure, but not both. Coleman makes sense bc Avs were interested in him at last years TDL and were deep in talks to trade for him. Hyman isnt leavening the Leafs IMO

Like the direction of this roster build though

Detroit moves up about 2 rounds to take Compher I could see it working.

Why not trade Graves and pay Seattle a 3rd to Seattle to take Compher at least you would get something back for him

If Landy wants more I am okay with it but I am looking at cheaper goaltending options if Grubauer wants more. I am fine rolling with a Mrazek, Driedger, Ullmark, etc.

I would much rather Hyman than re-signing Saad and I am not sure how much of a raise the Leafs can afford for him. I love Hyman's compete and motor and his puck retrieval is vastly superior over Saad's at this point in their careers.

    Player A career 0.4 ppg CF% 48.2 xGF 8.5 xGA 4.6 +3.9
    Player B career 0.4 ppg CF% 49.0 xGF 11.0 xGA 14.2 -3.2

So why is one a supposed cap dump and the other not?

If the Avs go deep in the playoffs this year or win the Cup, Gru will be a big reason for that. I can't see them just letting him walk and going with guys who haven't accomplished nearly as much over their careers. I see where you're coming from, though, and it could work a la the Hawks and Anttii Niemi but that's a big risk.

I'm with you on Saad - I like what he brings overall but if they can get a guy that can fill the same role who is younger, that's a better deal for them. But, Saad would likely be a bit cheaper than $5M - I can't see him commanding much more than $4M on the open market at this point of his career. He says he can see himself in Colorado long-term so maybe he takes a big discount to stay? I will say it's more likely Joe pulls off a trade rather than pay a guy like Hyman $5M in FA - that's more his style.

I know there is a lot of optimism around Newhook but I can't see him being able to jump to the NHL and take over at 3C right away. I think it's a lot more likely that they'd just not re-sign Saad and put Newhook at wing on the 2nd line to get his feet wet at the NHL level. They have someone they know can play 3C in Jost and will have options at 4C.

Hyman would be a good pick up, just will be very expensive and I think avs need to be careful on giving out contracts to guys who will be in the 5-6m range with term. Mackinnions contract is coming up soon so if you can get what you need in a cheaper signing like Coleman in comparison as an example, I think the avs would be wiser to do such and avoid spending all the way to the cap with term on UFAs.

I do agree if Grubi asks too much, just look for a cheaper starter. I have confidence with the Avs D Core and coaching, they could roll the dice on a guy like Drieiger like you said and will be fine. Based on how Dubnyk and Johansson have come from god awful teams and stats and look good in the Avs net....Same should be applied to a capable starter who is cheaper.
