Goaltending will ruin this team

Created by: MatthewsFan
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 21, 2021
Published: Apr. 21, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Leafs team save percentage during this 5 game losing streak is .839 (terrible).

Really liked how Sandin played last night, 16:14, he showed notable confidence on and off the puck. He held his own in puck battles, and finished with a 74 percent five-on-five expected goals (all stats via Natural Stat Trick), second among Leafs players who played the full game. He needs to be an everyday player.

The Leafs owned the majority of the five-on-five high-danger chances (55 percent) and expected goals (58 percent), but it’s not going to matter when they get goaltending like they did. This team doesn’t need more offence it’s fffffffin goaltending. Hopefully Campbell comes in on Thursday and goes on another run. I just hope by the start of the playoffs they have a healthy roster. With Bogo out, looking like a couple weeks, please play Liljegren. But probably won’t, maybe a game. Will likely see Dermott or Hutton in.

I had a buddy tell me the other day that when Rittich is hot, he is unbelievable (we've seen that a few times playing him as a flame this year). But when Rittich is off. Bad Rittich is BAD! That second Pearson goal last night was beyond cringeworthy.

Even the commentators laughed at that second one 🤦‍♂️

Muzzin is the anchor of our matchup pair. If Liljegren gets a game, he'd have a better chance of getting paired with Rielly than Muzzin.

And yeah, it's pretty obvious to anyone that knows how to watch hockey what the main weakness has been in the last 5 games.

There’s no chance Keefe would pair Rielly with Liljegren 😂, they’d get crushed. It’s possible if Liljegren gets in Keefe pairs him with Sandin as he has before but more than likely we see Sandin paired Dermott.

I wouldn't say it's entirely goaltending. We should have had a 7-2 win on Sunday. Goaltending wasn't bad but bad luck kept Vancouver in it. Campbell is without a doubt the starter unless Andersen comes back and takes it back. Rittich was embarrassing last night. Goals 3, 4 and 5 were back breakers.

Liljegren I think would be a good guy to pair with Rielly, not for the stretch drive but eventually. It's a good combination. Both terrific skaters and Liljegren is the responsible one while Rielly goes offensive. He should be mentored by Brodie so he can learn how to do all he does with his stick. Liljegren isn't going to be an offensive defenceman. He'll be a smooth skating two way guy.b

Well, there's also no chance Liljegren is paired with Muzzin to take on the other team's best players.

I also don't really see him pairing 2 rookies together.

If Rielly isn't playing top comp, he'd be fine with Liljegren.

Teams don't win with .839 save %.

3 goals per game is a high scoring team, this isn't the 80s.

So you think Liljegren can play defence like Brodie and will be able to cover up all the odd man rushes he has to defend because of Reilly’s poor pinches. I have faith Liljegren will turn into a very good two way Dman but not yet. Absolutely it makes the most sense to pair Liljegren with Muzzin and Sandin with Holl if they both get in. Put Muzzin back with Holl at the end of the game if you need to shorten the bench

Well, Rielly played with garbage the last several years, and somehow managed to keep a job, so I don't think it takes Norris calibre defending to partner with him.

I'd rather still have a matchup pair then 3 pairs with a defensive weakness and/or inexperienced players. More likely/easier to shelter a Rielly pairing, then it is a Muzzin pairing.

At the end of the day we're talking about a game or 2 maybe, not the stretch run.

No debate there, Liljegren maybe gets a game of two. More than likely it’s Dermott on the right paired with Sandin.

Your right Rielly has had terrible partners and finally has a great one and is still a liability on defence. Pairing him with a rookie defenceman would be a poor decision.

Agreed, 3 goals/game is high scoring. It’s not the 80’s but it’s also not 10 years ago. This league is higher scoring than it used to be in recent years so many teams score 3/game. A nearly 50M powerplay shouldn’t go 0/50, that roster should be 25-30% at least. 25% gives you 12.5 goals in that stretch which should win you the games. Not to mention their talent alone should keep the puck out of their own end, few teams in the league should be able to post 30 shots against TOR.. and none of them are above the border

LOL, this is some fun math right here!!!

25 shots on goal with .839 sv% = 4 goals. So even if the Leafs held teams to 25 shots in these last 5 games they were giving up 4 goals.

The 1 for 40 PP dry spell was over about a dozen games. The Leafs were 9-1 before the last 5 games that their goalies forgot how to save a puck. So before that they were winning despite a slumping PP.

The Leafs are lucky to get 3 PP opportunities a game, so even with the PP firing on all cylinders you are talking less than 1g per game.

Leafs are still 7th in the league in goals per game with 3.26 (even with their PP tanking).

Right, so between the leafs having the star power to score 4+ per game(which if they aren’t then it’s an underachievement) and when their goaltending isn’t at its best they allow 4 goals per game. So a decision in OT/SO is made at which point you should be getting a point minimum. Blaming goaltending is all well and good but you have to at some point you have to point the finger at the idiot that believes in the 3 headed monster( the GM). It’s his fault they are there, it’s his fault you don’t have a Vez type G. Maybe it’s goaltending coaching that is the issue. But yup, just blame the professional players who were great enough to get to the big show.

There hasn't been a team score 4 g/game in decades over an entire season. But yeah, Leafs are pretty disappointing for not being able to pull that off, should be easy for them!!!

Are you sure you aren't confusing reality with video games?

The rest of your rant is pretty hard to follow, so I won't bother even trying to sort through it.

It's a 5 game stretch where they are having tough goaltending. Before that Campbell won 11 straight starts.

This stuff tends to happen over a season.

Maybe just take a breath there.

Hahaha take a breathe?! I’m not the idiot fan that made this post 🤣🤣🤣🤣

1. Don’t really care about the leafs
2. I’m the one telling you goods to chill, blaming the G is just ridiculous and childish. Look at the bigger picture for once. Leaf fans are absurd smh

Ridiculous and childish...

Didn't you a second ago go on a rant about a team underachieving if they aren't scoring over 4 goals per game (impossible), and calling the GM an idiot because he doesn't have a Vezina calibre G (so easy to find every team has one right?)

Pot meet kettle.

I didn't make this ACGM either but Rittich was plain awful last night, and that's after Campbell letting in some weak goals over the last couple of games.

Fans (especially Leaf fans) tend to get panicked pretty easily when things aren't going perfectly.

It's pretty doubtful the goaltending will stay at .839 sv% much longer, and a win or 2 will put all this goalie panic in the rear view mirror soon enough.

Omg this is so far over your head. It shouldn’t have to be explained to this degree. You’re right, your 3 goalies are trash and the reason you guys lose any games. Have a nice day

Over my head.

Your theory:

Toronto = good

Other CDN teams = bad

Toronto = score bunch goals because...good

Other teams = not score as much even if the Leafs goalie has a bad game because...bad

Yeah, tough concept to follow.

Still? 🤣🤣🤣

-leafs have so much offensive talent that the game shouldn’t be in their own zone, even more so in the weak af North division

There’s no need to dive deep into anything, the statement says it all.

Yep. It's always that simple. It's why everyone that bets on hockey wins constantly, because the better team just wins every time.

Oh wait, sometimes something like last night happens.

Holtby stops 37 of 40. Rittich stops 23 of 28. And this game was more even then the first game Nucks beat Leafs in OT.
