As a Canes fan...Necas has a long way to go before he can be considered even on an honorable mention list of underrated players. He’s too young and inconsistent.
Ray Shero missed on a lot of first round picks (Pouliot, Morrow, Bennett, Despress, etc.) but he absolutely hit a home run with Jake Guentzel in the 3rd round in 2013. That pick wasn’t even originally ours. Part of the Brandon Morrow trade. I don’t think anyone at the time figured the 3rd round pick would end up being the most valuable piece

Which is why we should always wait before judging a trade
Cases in point:
-everyone thought NSH fleeced MTL by getting Subban
-that Morrow trade
-the EK65 trade
-Lucic vs Neal

I mean Nashville got a SCF and a Norris caliber year with subban, and they got out of the contract. Weber is a cap dump now on MTL. Sure he was better for a little longer but neither are good right now and Nashville doesn’t have Subban on the books.

No, Weber is 35 and has a lot of miles on his body. His days of being a top end D are over. Idk why you rate him so high. Most habs fans want him to retire LOL. At the end of the day, if I had to choose between who I’d rather have right now between Weber or Subban, I’d chose neither. Nashville did alright
I'd say Guentzel has to hold this title, at least for me. I play fantasy hockey every year and I'm shocked every year on how well he produces. I always tell myself he's a product of Crosby but he can definitely hold his own especially when Crosby is out.

Uh?
A player doesn't change from both extremes (from being a physical beast who uses his shot all the time to one that doesn't use either) in a matter of 6 months.
Such a situation happens gradually, he IS injured, anyone with an eye can tell that

He isn’t injured, he’s hit a wall. Most habs fans would say the same thing. Like I said, idk why you rate him so high. Injuries have probably caught up with him. The days of Weber being a #1 guy are over. Dude had a great career, but he is what he is now. It would take a miracle to get out of that contract. As a rangers fan you should know this. Look at Rick Nash. He went from an elite 40 goal scorer to a middle 6 forward overnight.

Dude Nash was on a 20 goal pace in 15-16 and the year after he was on a 28 goal pace.

So no it didn't happen overnight
From 40 goals to 20 goals? That is overnight lol. I never said Weber isn’t an NHL caliber defensemen anymore. I said he’s not a #1 guy. He’s still absolutely a great top 4D, but he’s paid to be a #1 guy and isn’t that anymore. Nash went from an elite 40 goal guy to a good 2nd line forward. Again, they’re both useful players, but they are a shell of their previous self.
My general rule about considering players underrated or not depends on pay scale. I think jake at 6 million is fair and he is what he is wouldn’t call over or underrated just a guy that goes out and does what he’s getting paid to do. Underrated players I look at the guys who have been in the league a long time providing multiple aspects to a team and gets paid modestly for what they actually do like josh archibald provides a ton on pk plays far more physical than his frame should allow while also being an option to get shuffled around the line up. Typically a 4th liner that does so much right coach tosses him up on top line from time to time.
Strome has gone from Overrated to Underrated back to Overrated
Actually he went from being A Top Pick with skill to struggle with two Tire Fires over to NYR and learned how to be a ppg player...continuously...for years now...with or without Panarin...
You just never know???

Jake has been a PPG player his last 3 seasons. If his contract was up right now, he’d be looking at 8 million AAV. He’s definitely underpaid.

What you’re describing to me is contract value or “bargains”. Underrated to me is if the vast majority of fans view someone as a third liner but they’re performing like a first or second liner.
