Keeping Saad and Graves

Description
I like the idea of Vanecek that I have seen in a few posts (and clearly it's destined to happen based on the history between these teams), but I think he should be a Grubauer complement rather than replacement. If Washington would take Francouz, who is very good when healthy but won't get taken by Seattle, then maybe a trade works. If not then just keep Francouz.

The other thing here is the Seattle trade. This stems from how well the Toews/Girard pairing has worked. If they stay together, then the team needs to fill that last LD spot. As such, keeping Graves would be ideal. I wouldn't pay through the nose to make this happen, but if it's not too expensive to steer Seattle toward Donskoi then it might be worth it. Add in the fact that Graves can be traded before his contract is up to bring back something in return, and it's almost neutral in terms of extra assets being given up. In short, Donskoi is just the easier loss for next year (IMO).

LTIR is just filled with guys I think have a decent to good shot at being part of the team's future (organized by position and not ranking).

EXPANSION DRAFT:

Protected List - (1) MacKinnon, (2) Rantanen, (3) Landeskog, (4) Kadri, (5) Burakovsky, (6) Jost, (7) Nichushkin, (1) Makar, (2) Girard, (3) Toews, (1) Vanecek. Note that Saad and Grubauer sign after the draft or at least after the deal is made to send Donskoi to Seattle.

Kamenev holds zero value as compensation though -- and I would rather have Graves than Donskoi (after an overperforming season on a stacked team) + 3rd if I'm SEA

I hear your point. As I said in the description, I'm not paying a ton to keep Graves on the Avs. If Seattle doesn't accept this or similar (change Kamenev to Kovalenko or something) then fine. They take Graves and that's that.

I think a lot depends on the outcome of this year, if saad doesn't have a big playoffs there's no real reason to be bringing him back, he hasn't been outstanding. As for graves and donny i don't think you really need to give anything to keep either. We're talking 3rd pairing LHD if you can't replace that from within the system we've done scouting all wrong. And if they take donny we move kaut up to the third line with nichuskin which i think would be a solid defensive line. I think would be for moving graves before the expansion draft for a couple picks and then see who they take in the draft. We have plenty of players in the pipeline and then at next years deadline we can use the picks we acquired to help bring in something we are lacking.

Graves could be important, based on the role he fills, if you don't want to count on Johnson staying healthy. I don't think the team would miss some of the second tier assets as much as they would Graves.

Losing him isn't the end of the world though by any means. Nor is keeping Donskoi in lieu of Saad. I like the looks of this team though. No real weaknesses.
