Why would we be trading down? If Berniers is available wouldn't we take him?

Right? If he's available, he's the easiest bet on being an impact in the NHL. Being the hardest working guy on the ice every night + speed/skill/vision? Easy money, imo. Usually you only get to pick one.

If we drop to 3rd then idk what we do. Do we draft the best player available which will probably be a LHD/RHD, which is not a position that we REALLY need help in? Or do we draft a lower ranked player like Eklund or Sillinger simply because they fit the mold better? Personally I'd rather fill the void of prospects in the forward positions than get a potentially better player who is a defender

Sorry I should have specified. In this scenario, I assumed we lose the lottery and Berniers gets selected. So rather than taking a D, Trading down to take Eklund

That's what I would do in that situation but I'm not sure what kind of value we'd get. How far down do you think we would trade to nab Eklund? Cause I'm confident he still goes top 5

I figured Ottawa at 6 is the most likely trade destination
