Rangers don't really have room for Dermott. This is a pretty light return regardless.

I heard an insider say Hyman might be asking for a similar contract to Gallagher, $6.5mill AAV

He can ask for $12 million if he wants, but he's not getting it. Of course the agent's ask is going to be higher than what he actually expects/gets, negotiation is his job.

I heard from the brother of this insider that he is only asking $2.9M.

Both our comments hold the same merit.

It's not some made up opinion. Hyman is turning into a better player than Gallagher. If Gallagher is worth $6.5m what do you honestly think Hyman is worth?

The same insider in the same quote said if Hyman wants to stay a Leaf his ask will start with a 4. If he wants to test UFA the ask will start with a 5.

It's pretty well as simple as that.

NSH declines. An offensive dman like Reilly serves no purpose to them.

I prefer to use contract comparables over insider guesses. I just can't see a guy taking a huge pay cut to stick around in Toronto when other guys got paid their value. I don't really care though, just my take

Ya, that trade is kind of pointless.

    Neither team does it.

You literally began in this thread with "I heard an insider say".

Leafs can't afford to pay him anything above $4.5M. It's not really about previous contracts, comparables around the league, etc.

If he's wearing a Leaf on his chest next year, he's not going to get market value.

Now, the kicker in the Leafs offer, is they may be willing (or have to) go longer term then most teams.

There is no way Savard signs for 2,5 mil a year. I think he will be massively overpaid and get a 5x5 typpa deal

if you're gonna quote an insider....quote all the details...

Pierre LeBrun said he spoke with six front office executives, not from the Toronto Maple Leafs, to see what they thought the contract value was for Leafs pending unrestricted free agent forward Zach Hyman.

“And what I will tell you is that the response I got varied anywhere from $4.5 million a year to $5.5 million a year. And a lot of that is based on player comparables of signings we’ve had here since the pandemic.

Brendan Gallagher tops the list of course at $6.5 million a year. He’s 28 just like Zach Hyman by the way. And I will tell you that I think Hyman’s camp led by agent Todd Reynolds will definitely try to introduce that contract as part of the conversation after the season, but again I didn’t hear anyone give me a $6.5 million in a comparison.

Bottom line to me is that I think if Zach Hyman wants to remain with the Leafs where the cap is tight, the number is going to have to start with a four. I think if he hits the open market, the number starts with a five.”
