in a cap strapped system, why trade Virtanen 2.25 mil for Johnsson 3.4 mil + 1 year?

i don't see a lot of upside in that deal

Johnsson is a more responsible player and can kill penalties. I think he would be a guy that works well in the Canucks system that can be more effective in a middle 6 role than Virtanen is. Ideally if the Canucks did this they would be able to swap picks to compensate for the extra year.

I posted the trade yesterday as just Virtanen for Johnsson and had 2 devils fans say they'd accept that.

There's no reason for Winnipeg to trade a good bottom six player for a guy that has shown nothing so far and the 2nd doesn't close the gap enough to make it enticing.

Why is Seattle taking a goalie making 4.3M that’s been around .900 SV% the past two seasons?

Veteran presence and GM's always cycle back to reliable veteran goalies who have handled large workloads in the past. If he finishes the season out strong like he has the 2 games since covid then I think he's a reasonable option.

    Wheeler (The Athletic) on Lind:
"Last year, as Lind struggled as an AHL rookie, I told a number of diehard Canucks fans in my life to be patient. Part of that was a belief in his tools, part of it was probably me not wanting to give up on a player I have been high on since his draft year. But Lind has begun to make true on his talent level this season.
    ...
Lind is at his best when he’s playing an honest, north-south game. He’s not going to light up the highlight reel but he can make plays through holes, he’s a fast skater and he doesn’t really lack any one offensive quality. I still think he’s the kind of player who projects to slide up and down an NHL lineup, capable of playing a depth role on a good team or supporting higher in the lineup as more of a complementary piece"

Basically he is Mason Appleton 2-3 years ago. Canucks should hang onto him so when they are in a position to make a run in the playoffs he is ready to go. If Appleton is still with the Jets after the expansion draft, they will keep him.

The amount of leverage Seattle is going to have with cap and selections. You’d most likely need to incentivize them as other veteran goalies will be available plus they will have access to UFAs before anyone else to see about signing them.

I agree with that completely I'm just impatient and want a 3C now lol. I recognize it's not the best move though.

I think Holtby is near the top of that list but if they don't take him that's fine the Canucks can always buy him out if they really want the capspace. I definitely wouldn't use assets to get rid of him
