NJD Off-season

Created by: Wereateam17
Team: 2021-22 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 12, 2021
Published: Apr. 22, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Ideal Off-season for the devils:
1. NJ takes Luke Hughes who can increase offensive production on the backend for the devils and can quarterback the powerplay in the future.
2. Use NYI 1st rounder to select shoot first player late in the first round. Devils don't have many players who have a shoot first mentality which leads to them often getting to passive, especially on the pp. A couple of players NJ could go for include Matthew Coronato who put up 45 goals in 48 games in the USHL or Samu Tuomaala who also has a good release and put up 15 goals in 30 games in Finland. I say NJ goes for Coronato, mainly considering the fact that he was almost at a goal per game playing against older competition in the USHL.
3.Resign Ryan Murray- he's been good defensively and will probably be needed if the devils want to give blackwood any sort of defensive help.
4. Bring in a cheap RD- There are some options available both in UFA an RFA, or even by trade.
5.Sign a 3rd line center. Devils will need someone to replace zajac, especially on the pk, one player that comes to Thomas Nosek in VGK, or Luke Glendening.
6. Finally the devils will need to sign a back up for blackwood. Wedgewood has been decent but he is UFA or could also play for Binghamton at the beginning of next year. He would serve as a pretty decent 3rd goalie if Blackwood or the backup we/re to be injured
7. Find a guy who can finish plays and score goals and put him alongside Hughes.
8. Bring Holtz to NA
9. Trade for Bad Contract- Lots of teams around the league are looking for cap space, given that there's a flat cap for the next couple of years, a lot of teams will be trying to move bad contracts in order to resign their players or possibly sign a ufa. Devils could then use the assets they get from these trades and move them to acquire an impact player for the forward group.

Bruins decline. No reason to downgrade.

Go ahead and make an honest effort to justify that boston trade.

FYI edit in the description that our first first round pick is Luke Hughes, not Dylan Guenther.

Graves to the devils could happen but its not bc they are afraid hes gone in the XD, they wont trade him prior to the draft

But the trade Merkley offers 0 value to the Avs, he went unclaimed on the waiver wire for a reason, and with his cap hit, its bc he doesnt offer much.
The pick is good, but the throw ins really arent as tempting

I actually think this is relatively well thought out, with the exception of the Boston trade. I think trying to find a RW of DeBrusk's caliber is smarter, because Bratt is playing really well on the Left. I also think the Hughes-Holtz connection will eventually be lethal, so that's exciting.

On the other hand, it might be interesting not to look for another forward and continue to let the ones you have develop. I think Zacha, Sharangovich, Kuokkanen, and McLeod have all benefitted from more playing time this year, and might be even better if that isn't taken away. I might not shake it up much and do this for the top 9 instead:

Zacha-Hischier-Bratt (ik what I said but still)
Kuokkanen-Hughes-Holtz
Wood-McLeod-Sharangovich

That all being said, I think your D and G moves are smart.

Coronato would be great - but he will be gone in 1st half of 1st round.
Maybe Simon Robertsson gets to late 1st.

One alternative if you want power play QB and a shooter...
Take Guenther, Lucius or even Sillinger with 1st pick (best shots in draft)
And grab Scott Morrow with the NYI pick, if its PPQB you want.

The two draft picks are ideal if NJ is fortunate enough to have those two players available at their picks.
