Obviously have a ton of cap space to go after any free agents, but in general I feel like Seattle is destined to struggling for offence until the develop more talent from within. Luckily for the Kraken they have a ton of cap space and can go after any free agent they want, although I find it hard to convince a big name to come to a brand new expansion team when they have an opportunity to go to a contender immediately. Some names I see being potential fits (as of now, would change with extensions after the draft) would be:
- Mikael Granlund
- Nikita Gusev
- Brandon Sutter
- Mike Hoffman
- Alexander Wennberg

As for the defence, it's pretty strong for what's to be available. I have Kraken management banking big on Vince Dunn developing on a similar path to Shea Theodore to be the anchor on the back end. Definitely a lot more puck moving guys than defensive guys available. Would likely look to free agency to address that as well. Some guys I see available for that position would be:
- Alec Martinez
- Jamie Oleksiak
- Ryan Murray
- Marc Staal
- Jake McCabe

Goaltending looks to be set, barring any trades from teams to help them protect extra guys. Chris Driedger will be looking for his best shot at a team willing to give him a starter's job immediately. I feel like Seattle can best do that while having a good veteran in Holtby behind him if he falters while also being able to add some depth from the expansion draft and minor trades. I don't really see goaltending as an area that would be addressed via free agency so I won't list an options there.

Overall, I wouldn't expect this team to compete like Vegas did. They may be in a fight for a playoff spot with some good coaching, but a lack of offence is likely to hurt them quite a bit. I'd say they likely finish within the 23-32 range of the league and look to be in the lottery for one of the top 5 players in next years draft (Shane Wright, Matthew Savoie, Brad Lambert, Rutger McGroarty, etc) which isn't the worst idea to start building the team around one of them.

It's a 5th round pick dude. Not a steep price at all. & when Philadelphia has defencemen in the minors that can step in and take Gostisbehere's spot, and they will need JVR's scoring up front.. I don't think a 5th in a very unpredictable draft is a big price at all. Stop nit picking over the smallest details.

I'm not knit picking over the 5th round pick. I'm saying the Flyers will just let the Kraken select JVR. I believe the Flyers will prefer the extra cap space. The Flyers have a surplus of depth scorers. They're in need of actual top of the lineup scoring.

Well considering the Flyers' powerplay currently ranks 20th in the league, and JVR has 26% of their powerplay goals this year.. I'm pretty sure he's valuable to Philadelphia. I don't think they'd care about a 5th round pick for that.

If Caleb jones isn’t seen to be in the mix for a regular role I doubt they take him. Kassian has been a big fan favourite before they could look at that as a positive. I know his game has fallen off but it’s beginning to come back around lately getting more engaged again. I wouldn’t rule that out as an option.

Jones could easily be flipped somewhere else after being selected. But in terms of value, Jones offers far more than Kassian. I don't see Seattle taking that contract off Edmonton's books without paying for it and Holland has seemed to make it pretty clear he doesn't wanna give away any young talent or draft picks to improve the team since he didn't do anything at the deadline.

The 5th round pick doesn't move the needle far enough either way. The Flyers are leaving JVR and all of his greatness exposed in an expansion draft. From my perspective the Flyers will be content with whoever they lose in this expansion draft. If the Flyers were going to pay an added cost it would be to get the Kraken to take Ghost and JVR or JVR and Voracek but these are also highly unlikely scenarios.

Seattle should go after Allen from MTL instead of Fleury's rights

so... let me get this straight..

you say that Philadelphia needs more top end scoring, then you say that you think they'd make a deal with Seattle to take 2 of their top scorers? That seems pretty counterintuitive

not when they're already taking Holtby, Driedger, and Hill from other teams. Plus I have them trading for 2 prospect goalies. There's no room for Allen. If Montreal wanted that, they can pay Seattle to do it.

JVR and Voracek are not what I consider top end offensive talents. They're good but not great. The Flyers as most teams do need more of a game breaker talent up front than more of the same. Since finding that type of player is unlikely they need to address other areas. As a Canuck fan I assume you haven't seen much of the Flyers. They can score with or without JVR and Voracek. The lineup is talented up front with more youth coming up. The Flyers would prefer the extra cap space to fix the defensive woes and or be ready to pounce if an elite player became available.

Tanev will definitely be protected, I know the Quick Protect won't do it but it will be Giordano exposed instead of Tanev.

I'm actually not a Canuck fan at all. "TrueCanuck" means True Canadian..

But again, it makes no sense to trade away something that you need if you don't already have an upgrade. Philadelphia doesn't have anything better than JVR to score if they lose him. There's nothing available on the free agency market that's an improvement on him either. When you're a team that's struggling to score, special teams is key. & again with JVR having 26% of the Flyers' powerplay goals this year, that's exttremely valuable to them. That's why he was signed in the first place. Philadelphia knew exactly what they were getting in him, a powerplay specialist that has defensive woes. That was no secret to anyone. I highly doubt they throw him away for nothing knowing that he's done exactly what they brought him in for.

I understand your point about cap space, but it just doesn't have logic here. You don't give away your best powerplay guy on a team that struggles to score and use that cap space to sign defence. That's not solving the scoring issue at all. I could see it very more likely where Voracek is dealt to another team in the off-season, but I just can't see Philadelphia losing JVR when he's done exactly what he was supposed to do.

Guess we'll just agree to disagree from here.

I didn't use quick protect. I actually go through the roster and evaluate it based on each team. If Tanev is protected, then Calgary pays this price to protect Giordano. They're not gonna let their captain get taken for free in an expansion draft. It sends the wrong message to the fans and frankly even leaving him unprotected sends the wrong message. A team that is still trying to compete doesn't leave their best defenceman available without knowing he wouldn't be protected.

Oh, that's a really dumb choice then. Giordano has one year left the team has clearly had a leadership problem and no one id paying to keep a 37 year old on their roster, he will be exposed and if he's taken great, if not great. Tanev has been the best D man on the Flames this year, he will be protected no doubt whatsoever. Giordano has been well behind Hanifin, Andersson and Tanev this season, it's not close.

I guess you missed the point where teams that are contending don't lose a captain for nothing... sends a terrible message to the fans.

I would suggest that 95% of the fans expect it... I guess you missed the point where he shouldn't really be the captain anymore, the group had a horrible year leadership wise and he has severely lost a step. If the team wants to be competitive, paying to keep Giordano is the opposite of that.

ah, no wonder why Calgary can't seem to win. Throwing away good players and blaming them for their problems.

The Flames problem is with Gaudreau, Monahan, Tkachuk, Backlund, etc. then it's on Treliving. Not Giordano. The captain is the easy target, sure. Doesn't mean he's always the reason for it.

JVR was a stop gap player signed to help boost fan base support that they were going for it while they waited for younger players to develop. Now he's a 3rd line PP specialist that makes $7 million per year. There's no justification for trying to keep him.

I mean you said you went into each team and analyzed needs... You'd recognize that Giordano has been a borderline 2 LD this year at best of times, the pipeline is full of LD and there are plenty to sign for less money that would be just as effective defensively. I'm not sure what on earth you could have analyzed to be so incredibly wrong.

The fact you even mention BAcklund on that conversation shows just how little you've tried to know, you looked at a couple numbers sida screw it good enough and called it a day, then to try stand by being so incredibly wrong, that's where the real silliness comes in.

Not what I said at all, you said you evaluated each team, usually that would mean you want to be right but you've chosen to be wrong and then try double down on it with a really really bad justification. That just doesn't make sense now does it?

That's very true. In this case though you've provided stone cold evidence that you're wrong claiming that Backlund is a part of the problem, that Giordano has been one of their best D men etc. etc. It's okay to be wrong and just admit you didn't know what you're talking about here, take the criticism move on and learn something. To chose to be wrong though and then stand by it... You can do better, I believe in you!
