Description
So isles twitter now wants the islanders to play Komorav over Wahlstrom, and this blows my f*cking mind. Now, my dislike of Komorav is well-documented on this site, but for good reason. I understand your team needs some grinders and defensive forwards blah blah blah whatever. But guess what, the islanders already have so many forwards they play every night like that it’s not even funny. At least 3 of Martin, Clutterbuck, Dal Colle, Zajac, Johnston and Komorav play every night, and then we wonder why we can’t buy a goal sometimes. Now I know we just scored 6 against the Rangers, but they eyes a train wreck defensively. You need depth scoring always, but we don’t get much of that cuz Barry scratches the young guys who can score. We’re never going to go far in the playoffs with brain dead lineup decisions in series against Boston and Washington. We don’t need Komorav and his stupid penalties, when Dal Colle, Clutterbuck, Zajac and Martin are already playing. This issue is even further enhanced when you take into account all of our top 6 wingers are extremely streaky (and Lee is injured.) Our cup window is probably gonna close soon, so we need to maximize our chance of winning by making good lineup decisions. Here are my lines.

This guy is the odd man out lol - scores at a higher rate than 97% of the league and is above average defensively

Tell me about it, with Comeau being one of the coaches favourites for some reason. He plays on the freaking 3rd line. I wouldn’t even play him in Texas, let alone the NHL. He always falls over for some reason (he can’t skate), and when he’s on the ice they get WAY more chances. That being said Komo and Comeau should both be out of the league.

The zajac/palmieri trade was a mistake if it takes wahlstrom out of the lineup. How the hell are they going to just sit the player who carried the team for half the season? This is completely different from last years Dobson’s situation or this years bellows situation. Wahlstrom earned the right to be a regular, tbh just trade him this summer to a team that values him.

Wahlstrom increases this teams ceiling. Without him they’re definitely losing in the first round

Agreed. And I love what he’s been able to do with Pager, but they’ve got to start experimenting with Wahlstrom on one of the top two lines. Imo, he’s learned the defense/physicality/grit part of the game; it’s not totally consistent yet, but that will come with experience (which he isn’t getting if he’s in the press box). It should be about time to start nurturing his offensive abilities.

I kind of wish young players had more power because then trotz wouldn’t be able to do the sh*t he pulls w/ wahlstrom + barzal

Yeah I just can’t believe that wahlstrom is the odd man out. He’s 100% a top 5 forward on this team and you have some isles fans saying “wahlstrom isn’t getting back in the lineup unless there are multiple injuries” , “wahlstrom hasn’t been good the last 2 games can you blame Barry” .

If the isles were in a bigger market this would get more media attention. Listen I don’t think bellows or Aho should play at this point in the season. I don’t think every young player should play, but man what they’re doing to wahlstrom is all kinds of messed up.

Shoutout to @forsbergforvezina for the link, per evolving wild website here is where wahlstrom ranks among isles forwards (excluding lee)

Goals per 60 min: 1st
Points per 60 min: 3rd
Shots per 60 min : 1st
Individual expected goals per 60 min : 3rd
Expected goals against per 60 min (defensive ability) : 5th

Wahlstrom also doesn’t turn the puck over much. Here’s how he compares to other isles forwards in giveaways per 60 min:

Wahlstrom: .97 give/60
Komarov: 1.06
Dal colle : 1.12
Pageau : 1.26
Bailey : 2.24

It’s really hard to root for this team knowing that they’re keeping one of their best players in the press box.

It’s bizzare that since the isles r good w Trotz that at least half the fans think he’s immaculate and makes zero mistakes. He’s probably bottom 5 in terms of lineup decisions coaching wise. I do understand that Wahlstrom hasn’t been as good lately, but Dal Colle, Komorav, Zajac, Clutter, etc. are never good yet they’re never punished

Agreed, trotz system definitely works but I’ve been saying for a while trotz holds back this teams true potential because he needs to have 5 4th liners in the lineup at all times and hates young players

No doubt Wahlstrom had a bad 2 games against Boston, but he’s earned the right to be a regular and the isles are a better team when he’s in the lineup.

If you look at the chart I linked above, wahlstroms QOT (quality of teammates) is below average. That’s because for a majority of this season, he’s spent a lot of time on the ice with komarov and Andy Greene. Quality of teammates affects production more than quality of competition so it’s even more impressive he’s been able to produce despite the fact that he’s had to play with pylons.

It’s impressive honestly that we win like this considering we have like 7 players playing a night who contribute negatively offensively

Look at nils Hoglander for example. His Quality of teammates % is well above average because he plays a lot with guys like horvat, pettersson, boeser etc. I like hoglander a lot and he has a really bright future, but he wouldn’t have the kind of production he’s having playing on the 3rd line with replacement level players.

In order here are the main reasons why the isles are in 1st place
1. Two Norris caliber D
2. Barzal
3. Eberle
4. Wahlstrom
5. Goaltending

I feel like a 3rd line of Bailey-Pageau-Wahlstrom would work

Agreed although goaltending would probably be 2 for me. We’ve won a decent amount of games we had no business winning cuz of Varly/Sorokin

It definitely would, but you know trotz needs to have zajac , komarov , Martin and clutterbuck in the lineup at the same time. Thanks Wally for carrying the team, time for a washed up 35 year old to take your spot in the lineup!

Yeah I can see that argument . Actually I’d put goaltending 3, wahlstrom 4, eberle 5.

There were like 4 or 5 games in March that wahlstrom singlehandedly won for us. The game in Pitt where his PP snipe and assist to Nelson were the only 2 goals in a 2-0 win, the NJ game where he sniped through kulikov, tying the game in The 3rd against Philly. All of wahlstroms goals are clutch
