Pietrangelo

Created by: deys3232

Description
Alternate universe where the Leafs never extend Muzzin or sign Brodie, but sign Pietrangelo

This leaves them with enough cap space to keep Johnsson.

Keeping Johnsson reduces the need for a top 9 winger (Foligno)

Did the Leafs make the right decision to take Muzzin and Brodie? or should they have opted for Pietrangelo

Also lmk if there are any other alternate scenarios I should look at

This is supposed to be from the summer when he was a free agent. This is a hypothetical situation where he chose Toronto over Vegas

That is a thin defence with Dermott playing that high, and Sandin... I love haveing both Muzzin and Brodie... and I think Johnsson was toomuch of the same... Same with Kapanen... didnt think they would move both, but they are stronger defensively both up front, and on the back end for it

Dermott looked like he was going to be a solid 2nd pair guy, he has looked good when given the role, I think its just a matter of him actually doing it
If you think its a little thin, maybe split up the top pair

Johnsson 46 games 4g 6a
I’ll take Joey Anderson all day
And I’d take the combination of Muzzin Brodie over Petro.

Ngl I think the team is worse, but does Pietrangelo alone brings as much value as Muzzin and Brodie combined? Also, not sure what Johnsson brings to make a Foligno-type acquisition expendable.

Maybe its because the Devils suck. Johnsson fit the Leafs really well, he was perfect for Keefe's system

He had one good year playing with Matthews, he’ll do that for people.
Johnsson last year with the Leafs 43 games 8g 13a
Leafs are way better off without him and his 3.4 cap hit

This is how I look at it as well.

Muzzin and Brodie are big reasons why this team now has a solid overall defence, and I'd take Foligno over AJ in the playoffs anytime.

He was injured for the majority of the year, i don't think its fair to put to much stock into how he performed.
He is clearly better than Anderson

I like all 4 of those guys, but don't really want either pair going h2h with McDavid night in night out.

But is he clearly a $3.4M player?

If we throw out his poor play due to injury or a bad team (NJ) why are we allowed to use his great play (with great linemates).

It's not as if Kerfoot and Mikheyev are locks to make Johnsson a 50 pt guy.

It is a little thin and I probably agree I'd rather have Muzzin and Brodie but it's nice to see someone put some respect on Dermott's name. People wanna take him out of the lineup when he's been a super solid 3rd pair guy for us, IMO he's been better than Bogo this year, and as of late he's been better than Holl.

He certainly isn’t clearly better than Anderson, I bet you if you ask any NJD fan they’d take that trade back in a heart beat. Anderson’s production has been a bit underwhelming but he has been an important player for the Marlies through the early part of the season. He has proven to be a reliable two-way presence and has occasionally shown flashes of offensive skill.

He has been a threat on the penalty kill, scoring a pair of shorthanded goals. He will make an impact for the Leafs bottom 6 in the next year or two. And at a 750,000 cap it

3.4 is standard 3rd line money, Kerfoot is just as good, making about the same

But they added different aspects to Kerfoot's game, because what he was, wasn't worth the $$.

He's way more versatile and therefore valuable. Can play W or C. Can play in top 6 or bottom 6. Can now be a decent PKer.

They attempted to make him into a reliable checking line C (which didn't really work).

With how that roster is built, being a $3.4M 3rd liner that is no guarantee to get 40pts, and doesn't offer much else but being decent on the PP2, becomes expendable pretty quick.

Spezza can be signed for league min to put up some points and play PP2.
