Crazy idea that might backfire

Created by: Devil

Description
Devils badly need that #1 franchise defensemen. Makar is that guy. OS to a massive deal that Colorado might not be able to match and give up 4 picks. The 4 picks hurt to give up but if the Devils can get out of their rebuild next year with the addition of Makar, Holtz, Mercer, and Foote, then it would be worth it

Avs could probably match if they wanted would just need to buyout Johnson which will happen anyways if he doesn't waive for expansion.

Probably only an overpayment by a million. Aves match.

Chances are he never hits RFA

awful idea. I would take a top 3 pick in 2022 or 2023 by itself over Makar, and that is a very realistic possibility.

I don’t think it’s the best idea. But you never know I guess. But I’m more concerned with your Murray contract. Why??

2022: Wright, Lambert, McGoarty, Miroshnichenko, Nemec, Fleming, Howard, Savoie, etc etc
2023: Bedard, Michkov, the younger Fantilli, younger Jarventie, etc

I don’t know if we want to sit those ones out.
Makar would be nice though.

If the Devils are still in the running for the top pick in 2023 then something has gone very very wrong for them. They shouldn't even be in the running next year(2022), if we're being honest, they should realistically be a bubble team and end up picking in the 11-13ish range

What would be a realistic offer that Colorado wouldn't match? Or is there none?

I doubt we will be that bad in 2021-22. Next year, we would have an improved forward core with Holtz, Foote, and possibly Mercer. We added Makar who can help carry the defense. Plus we play every team, not only teams in our division. I could see us being in the 12-16 range

oh no. I meant to make it one year, not three. Whoops.

I don't hate the Makar idea because he basically fixes our problem on defense.

Completely agree. Especially if we get Makar, the Devils could be much better next year. Not playoffs, but around the 12-16 range

It would involve making him the highest paid player in the NHL.

The fact that they're still a bottom 3 team 7 years into the rebuild after picking first overall twice indicates that something already has gone very wrong for them. This team isn't going to be fixed in a single offseason, there are a lot of issues here that need solving.

Then I have some unfortunate news for you. It's going to be another rough year next year my friend. We all love Holtz but he's not solving all of our problems in his rookie year, Foote is fine but won't be producing a whole lot in his first full year, I doubt Mercer is on the team next year. This team is still extremely young and it's showed this season. Unless Hughes turns into a full fledged superstar next year this team isn't going anywhere

I mean everything that could that gone wrong with the Devils this season have gone wrong. Their 1B goalie retired right before the season started, their top center coming into the season and captain has been out of the lineup pretty much all season, the entire team got destroyed by covid, then continued to be crushed by even more injuries and covid throughout the season literally to this day.

If you think the Devils aren't going to be a better team, even a bubble team, next season then you have no idea what you're talking about. Theyre already one of the best 5v5 teams in the league, which is very impressive considering how young they are. On top of everything mentioned before, they have been sunk by horrible special teams and goaltending. If those 2 regress to the mean and they maintain being a very good 5v5 team, they will be in the race next season. They likely wont picking in the top 10 again after this season

Would make more sense to OS Hughes, VAN is in a much worse cap spot and although Hughes isnt near as good as Makar he is still an amazigng Dman

Canuck fans said that Hughes can't be OS. Not sure why though. But I agree
