CGY
Here are the most pressing positional needs Calgary should address at the right opportunity. #1 is most important while #3 is least important.

    1. A 1st line or 2nd line RW that shoots right and is either a power forward or can score goals in bunches.

    2. A mobile, shifty and fast-skating LW that shoots left, has an offensive flair in his game and can play with pace. He needs to be able to put up points and play on the 1st or 2nd line. This need will become more important if Johnny Gaudreau is going to sign with another team or be traded next year.

    3. A top 9 two-way centreman who is a very good skater, can make plays, win faceoffs, contribute on special teams and put up points with some consistency. This need will become more important if Backlund will be taken by Seattle.

If Giordano is not taken by Seattle, he will likely play the rest of his NHL career with the Calgary Flames.

That means the Calgary Flames will need to be 100% focused on drafting forwards with their top picks.

Unless of course, a defenceman is by far the best or safest player available when it is time to pick.
    SEA
    1. Backlund, Mikael
    Additional Details:
This is the first group of players Calgary needs to consider with their 1st round pick if any of them are available:

    1. Dylan Guenther (RW) Edmonton Oil Kings

    2. Fabian Lysell (LW/RW) Lulea

    3. William Eklund (C/LW) Djurgardens

    4. Matthew Beniers (C) University of Michigan

    5. Kent Johnson (C) University of Michigan

    6. Aatu Raty (C) Karpat

This is the second group of players Calgary needs to consider with their 1st round pick if any of them are available:

    1. Simon Robertsson (RW) Skellefteå

    2. Oskar Olausson (LW/RW) HV71

    3. Matthew Samoskevich (RW) Chicago Steel

    4. Matthew Coronato (LW) Chicago Steel

    5. Chaz Lucius (Centre/Winger who shoots right) USNTDP

    6. Xavier Bourgault (Centre/Winger who shoots right) Shawinigan

If most of these players are still available when it's Calgary's turn to pick, then the Flames should trade down.
    2.
    CGY
Preferably, Flames should try re-signing Gaudreau before his modified-NTC kicks in.

A contract offer similar to what James Van Riemsdyk got with the Flyers could convince him to stay in Calgary.

That means Gaudreau will likely have to be offered 7 million x 5.
      OTT
If not, he should be traded to any team that would overpay for a top 6 LW because they desperately need to stay in contention.

Many teams have done it before and it will happen again.

Please see my ACGM 2 posts that I made recently about what Gaudreau might be worth next year :)

How does a non-playoff team have two 5M+ players realistically up for expansion? Plenty of playoff teams would love to lose that kind of cap this summer.

Its Backlund or a younger option like Phillips. Gio is just too old and only 1 year term

Well if Looch waives (likely) Backlund will be protected. IMO he's the perfect mentor for the kids, would rather not loose him to Seattle

Also Pelletier is not a center, you seem to put him at 4C a lot. That would also ruin his development.
Personally I would resign Ryan over bringing in B. Sutter, put the kids on Backlunds wings and put Looch and like Gawdin on the 4th line. For defense keep Hanifin and Ras together, put Valimaki with Tanev, and have Gio run the 3rd line (if he's not selected by Seattle)

I just don't think there is a scenario where Backlund is exposed, he is the picture perfect story for a franchise, struggled out of the gate but the team stuck with him and he's become a key part of the core, good story for any prospect that wants a team to buy into him.
That coupled with the fact he has made every guy he plays with more defensively responsible, he's perfect to play with the Pelletier, Zary, Phillips, Ruzicka.

Players exposed for the Flames will hopefully be
        Lucic
        Ritchie
        Giordano
        Kylingotn
        Parsons
