I'm pretty sure he's their captain and won't be traded for that reason and the NMC. he's been putting up a lot of points this year and they wouldnt sell low on him for that, even if they were trading him

That Staal trade is less than what LA got for Jeff Carter. At this stage of their careers Staal is much better than Carter and he is having a good year. No chance Carolina does it. Maybe if they had to shed cap they do it without the retention but I still doubt it.

It's funny seeing Victor Rask -who was given unnecessarily long term and $ as a young RFA- in an AGM where JEE gets unnecessarily long term and $

Cautionary tale 😕

Hard to see JEE as too much more than a 4M$ player also so I don't think it'll be much of a bargain ever

They are in cap hell. And they have Trochek and Necas. What is better? Return Dougie or an ageing veteran who will not repeat that performance anytime soon. 6M AAV. I think that is their last chance to move him.

With Staal at 50% retained, he should be worth a 1st at least.

To the original poster...I’ll forgo commenting on why the Staal wouldn’t be traded at all or for this return. My question to you, who is the ‘rental’ in your post title? Do you consider a guy with a NMC with 2x$6M AAV a rental?

JStaal would be the 2nd highest scorer on the wild right now-typically superb D/Corsi impact- it's pretty jarring seeing him 50% retained for so very little

You need to resign Svechnkov and Hamilton and Mrazek and get enough players for the opening night.

$30M in cap space next season. Plenty of cap space to work with

The problem here isn’t the value you are trading for Staal. You just have the wrong team and player.

Buffalo has no interest in Rask

Out of curiosity would Sabres trade a conditional 7th pick that they likely never have to send for Rask 1/2 retained for the final year of his contract?
My only thinking is it is a very low risk move to see if he can help Skinner rediscover who he was in Carolina.

dont bother trying to explain this. The taxi squad will be gone next year and he thinks he can fly in AHLers around the country when there is an injury and only carry 20 players (and that somehow when a player is called up their salary doesnt count).

i wouldnt say its cap hell, but they will have to make sacrifices. 29.5 million in cap space and only 11 players signed.

I don't understand this logic. Skinner scored 40 goals in buffalo, he scored 30 goals 3 times in carolina. He didn't score because of victor rask.

Buffalo has Eichel, Reinhart, Cozens, Mittelstadt all as center options.

Staal would probably be a poor fit in MN. Wild traded Eric away partially because Wild needed a culture change but mostly because Staal didn't have the speed to play with the pace the system requires anymore. I doubt his brother has much better speed at this point.

I was unaware Skinner had a 40 goal season in Buffalo I haven't actually looked at his stats. I was under the impression his game went to hell as soon as he signed the contract. I'll ask you to forgive my ignorance in this case.

P.S. can the Wild please dump rask in Buffalo. Lol
