Ottawa declines. Tierney plays a far more important role in Ottawa than Roussel could and you are not giving up enough for the deal to make sense.

What could the Canucks add to make this trade happen?

I mean, the question would be "why did they not take Holtby?"

He has another year on his contract and is still a top end goalie. Seattle could start very strong with him in net. Whereas Vertanen... MIGHT play top 6 for them next year... I dont see it making sense for Seattle

Holtby is owed $5.7 million in actual cash next season. I can definitely see Seattle trying to avoid that expense since it is their first season and there is still uncertainty in terms of gate revenue. They may not take Virtanen either they may take MacEwan or Gadjovich or some one else. Point is, if they don’t take holtby, the Canucks are in a cap jam

Seattle will have to reach the cap floor, and should have no issue paying any actual salary above the cap for a few players since they will be saving cash on a few as well. As for cashflow without gate revenue, Seattle has paid $650M to join the league which means that $5.7 is peanuts when they are going to have to pay around $70-80M in salary regardless. The only way they dont take Holtby (imo obviously) is if Vancouver pays them a first to take a bad contract like Erikson.

Vegas also showed that it pays HUGE to have a competitive team right away. The city down there is booming with hockey right now, which many experts say would not have happened if the team struggled out of the gates like all the previous expansion teams. Seattle is going to spend money to be competative right away because it means more interest in the team and more money long term.

I’m open to trading greenway for a 1st. But I’d also want a skilled prospect back.
