This is not better than just signing Ovechkin around 10M. Bozak and Savard and Armia are better than Dowd, TVR, and Pinho, but not by anywhere near enough to lose a top goal scorer who has already captained the team to a championship. The Caps already have a top ten PK unit, so signing three guys for PK doesn't seem like a priority. They also have a pretty good power play, but the three guys they've used on the points this year are Ovechkin, Carlson, and Schultz. Losing two out of three to replace them with.... signing Joel Armia for less than he's making on a team that needs goal scoring, and then rushing a top prospect into the NHL? Nah. If the same cap space lets them sign Ovechkin, they probably just go with that. Pilon moves up before McMichael. Sprong plays. I'd welcome any of those UFAs to the Caps, of course, but only after Ovechkin is signed.

I'm convinced that there was already a verbal agreement in place to re-sign Ovechkin before they traded Vrana. They may wait until after the expansion draft to announce the contract so they can protect an additional forward from Seattle.
