Even if you do trade for Laine (unlikely with that offer), he isn't going to sign for 3yrs @ $6 million. His qualifying offer is $7.5 million so that is the starting point.

Laine next to Mcdavid would be sick, but it would cost more to trade for him and his contract would be more in the 7.5-8 mil range since his QO is for 7.5 mil

Need more salary for Laine and likely need another high end asset if you're asking them to take on Neal's contract and give you Laine.

Laine is an overrated prima donna, not interested in giving up two high-end assets to get him.

Well cbj isn’t overly interested in giving him up for scraps. This is the dilemma. Your dumping Neal. It’s not like it’s 2 high end assets straight up.

His QO is a huge overpay for his production.

Neal is an insignificant part of this deal IMO. The Oilers can buy him out for a $1.9M cap penalty, this saves them just $900k, you could just as well leave him out of it and it wouldn't impact the Oilers cap situation.

You calling a 1st and a recent 8th overall pick "scraps" is wholly ignorant. It's still two prime assets for a guy who isn't a good hockey player and has a QO of $7.5M. It's a joke of an offer from Edmonton's perspective - they wouldn't consider it for a minute.

True, but you have to make the offer or he is a UFA

No no. Sorry if I mislead you. I thought the offer was fine. (Not great or what we’re looking for but fine value wise). I was commenting on you saying you don’t want to pay 2 prime assets. That’s all. Also if Neal is that cheap to buyout it would be the better route.

And I alluded to those being high end assets in my post. Just slightly tarnished by the addition of Neal. Btw Neal with 1 million retained is not a net positive asset. IMO. Especially in this economy.

In regards to qo, this is one of the strangest situations we’ve seen in a while. He’s not worth 7.5 at all, but you gave up dubois to get him. I’m going with the hope that I think laine has a bigger ego for being a star than for what he gets paid. He takes a two or three year deal with oilers in place before the trade knowing he’ll play with two of the top 6/7 c in the league so he can show what he can do

Incorrect. That is the basic requirement for the Jackets to trade Laine. If we can't get that, we're better off keeping him and attempting to rehab him; selling low would merely make things even worse. So, no top-6 C, no Laine.
