Seriously Though, We Really Don't Need Left Wingers

Created by: Hawkisles
Team: 2016-17 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 12, 2017
Published: Jan. 12, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Reasons for each trade:

Chimera for 5th rounder- Florida has the cap space and could use a little more offensive depth. We have too many cooks in the kitchen offensively, especially in regards to bottom 6 forwads. Chimera for 5th rounder is reasonable for both sides here.

Boychuk/2nd rounder for Eberle/3rd rounder- Edmonton could very well be on the verge of a deep playoff run, but they don't have too many good defensemen. Arguably, they don't have any. While, we AREN'T on the verge of a deep playoff run, we can afford to lose a top 4 defenseman in exchange for offensive help. Personally, I think Eberle and Boychuk are of equal value in this trade. Both are valuable yet surplus players. However, I added in a pick swap in that benefits Edmonton just in case Chiarelli didn't like the initial trade offer.

Strome for Lindholm- Both players need a change in scenery, both players seem unhappy with their organizations to begin with and both players are of roughly equal value. I also think it'd be worth our while to get another Top 6 right winger just in case Eberle doesn't pan out with Tavares (though he really should).

"Arguably they don't have any (good defencemen)" Check again, although more is better. Unless the Isles can trade or ask him to waive his NMC, Boychuk is going to fill one the Dmen protection spaces in the expansion draft, which isn't good for the Isles. Boychuk is 33 years old next week with a full five years left on his contract at 6m a year. Might not be very appealing to have on the roster for any team long term.

Their current top 4 is as follows: Sekera, Klefbolm, Larsson, Russell. Larsson is good but the rest of them are kind of "meh". Boychuk is a better defenseman than any of those four, though I think Larsson will overpass him in time. In fact, I'd say Boychuk is probably a better all around player than Eberle (unimpressive last couple of years, but not horrible) but the only reason this deal makes sense is because Eberle's contract is more sensible. Besides, Edmonton gets to move up a round in the draft through this deal AND they address a genuine need (defense) with one of their surpluses (forwards). This deal makes sense for both sides.

Boychuk has NMC, he isn't leaving anytime soon. He doesn't want to. Trade gets vetoed. It would have to be Hamonic, like it or not. As a fellow Isles fan, I wish it could be Boychuk

I'm aware of the NMC. I think the Oilers would actually be one of the few teams he would be okay with getting traded to. The Oilers, after years of building through the draft, are FINALLY getting really good. If I were Boychuk, (an Edmonton Native by the way), and I wanted another cup before retirement, I'd rather play with Edmonton than New York right now.
