Lets say we miss the playoffs and decide to let the kids take on

Created by: math731
Team: 2021-22 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 28, 2021
Published: Apr. 28, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Sign Tatar and Danault before trading all the other guys. Give them more money over less term and trade them at the 2022 TDL if the team isnt in a playoff spot.

Also, keeping guys like Anderson, Petry, Edmundson and of course Gally is essential to help develop the kids the right way.

2021 NHL draft :

MTL ends up with the 11th OA pick. Eklund ends up falling to 8 and MTL somehow trade up to grab him using one of their multiple 2nd rounders. SJ might be a great fit for such a trade imo.

Trades
1.
MTL
  1. 2021 1st round pick (WPG)
  2. 2022 2nd round pick (WPG)
  3. 2022 3rd round pick (CBJ)
WPG
  1. Chiarot, Ben
  2. Weber, Shea ($2,500,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Give Weber one more chance to win a cup before retirement. I think we should expect him to play one last season.

To all WPG (and everybody) who thinks Weber is a bad contract, you're wrong... Once he retires (in 1-2 years MAX) NAS will be the team paying a penalty of 5 millions per season for the remaining years of his deal... With the habs paying somethink like 500K... Also, with 2,5m being retain, I dont think it should matter that much to WPG fans.

Ben Chiarot is a solid number 4 D who will be UFA next year.

Value: Weber retained = late first (22-32 OA)
Chiarot = 2nd + 3rd.
2.
MTL
SEA
  1. Price, Carey
Additional Details:
After another catastrophic season for the habs, Price decides to waive his NMC which would allow SEA to take him in the expansion draft.

Great fit for Price (and his family) and SEA (they get a local superstar). They hope for a similar scenario to VGK with Fleury.
3.
MTL
  1. 2021 1st round pick (FLA)
  2. 2023 3rd round pick (FLA)
Additional Details:
23rd OA in a weak draft

3rd pick becomes a 2nd if FLA reaches the playoffs in 2022 (which should be a lock)
FLA
  1. Drouin, Jonathan
Additional Details:
Theyve got the space to grab Drouin.

They grab a top 6 winger with elite skills and potential. They hope he explodes just like Duclair did this year. Perhaps having less pressure playing behind Barkov and Huberdeau will allow him to explode. I honestly hope he does, he's an awesome player/person.
4.
MTL
  1. Holloway, Dylan
  2. Neal, James
  3. 2022 1st round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
top 10 protect
EDM
  1. Toffoli, Tyler
Additional Details:
Value: Toffoli (with his contract + current season) = Holloway + a second

Neal (negative value) = a first

So basically getting Toffoli (while getting rid of Neal) at a bargain.

Allows Toffoli a shot at a cup alongside McD instead of losing for the remaining years of his deal.
5.
ARI
  1. 2021 1st round pick (WPG)
  2. 2021 1st round pick (FLA)
  3. 2021 2nd round pick (TBL)
  4. 2021 3rd round pick (WSH)
Additional Details:
I know how this one might look but hear me out... ARZ lost countless picks and prospects in the last couple of years while not having a first this year (even though its top 16). So perhaps, they could entertain the idea of trading a top prospect for multiple picks in order to restore their prospects pool... So this is basically 11th OA for 22OA, 23OA, 2nd rounder and a 3rd rounder. I personally think its a lot to give up but hey, we're on CapFriendly ACGM...
6.
MTL
  1. Eriksson, Loui
  2. Roussel, Antoine
  3. 2022 1st round pick (VAN)
Additional Details:
Top 10 protect
VAN
  1. 2022 2nd round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
Helping VAN with their cap situation and getting back a pick in return.

Holloway is an untouchable prospect would rather sign a scoring winger and buyout Neal than do that deal absolutely not needed

Weber is 35 and won’t play out the rest of his contract. On the scenario here, based on what you said the recapture penalty will be 5M for 5 season. Let’s say you do retain 2.5M, the jets are still hit with a 3.33M recapture penalty. That’s said, recapture doesn’t entirely work that simple and the figure is probably closer to 2M per. That is a lot to have on you books for 5 more years, so no, it’s not insignificant. Therefore, paying a first for Weber is unreasonable and isn’t happening even if he did approve a move to Winnipeg. Clearly you don’t see it, but that contract doesn’t carry a lot of value.

As for chiarot, he’s good but he’s not a 2nd and a 3rd good. There will be other options available in the summer, not that the jets will be looking for someone on the left side anyway.

Ok I am not advocating for this deal as I think a lot of these deals are far fetched. However you are mistaken about Webers contract. When and IF Weber retires hos entire recapture penalty falls on Nashville because they signed the deal. Also I believe the recapture penalty is paid over 2 seasons not 5

As you can see from the link above Montreal or in this case Winnipeg pays very little of the recapture penalty.

1st + Holloway = tooo much Neal has limited term oilers have much easier ways of handling that threw buyout or trade with retention

Gee, you no appreciation of other teams cap. And to expect teams to give up high picks for dumps is so impractical. And really overrate the value of so many of those Habs.

The issue for this trade is the actual value of Weber relative to his cap hit, not the recapture.
- Is he worth $7.9 million in cap space? No, that is why this AGM is trying to offload his contract.
- Is he worth $5 million in cap space? No, too much risk to the cap if he actually doesn't retire early.
- Is he worth $2 million in cap space? Maybe as that compensates the Jets for the risk that they are stuck with a sub-replacement defender from 2024-26. That said, no GM would retain that much salary on a contract with 6 years remaining, so this trade doesn't happen.

Yeah, this Edmonton trade isn't happening. Neal can be bought out for just $1.9M cap hit, that's not worth a 1st to a team that has TONS of cap space.

Holloway could've won the Hobey Baker this year (his draft+1 year) if he hadn't missed so much time with the WJC tournament and played injured through the last part of the season. He's a BEAST, 10 years younger than Toffoli and signed for millions less.

I was only responding to the poster who said that the Jets would have 5 years of 5 Mil recapture penalties. I also stated that I was not advocating for the trade and even went as far to say that these deals are all far fetched.

That's fair.

I agree the NSH recapture is nasty if he retires early even with the changes:
- retires after 21-22, then $6.143 million for 4 years;
- retires after 22-23 then $7.857 for 3yrs plus $1 million for 1 year (unless the league averages it out over 4yr)
Sure beats the old doomsday scenario of $24.6 million over 1yr if he retired after 24-25.

I also agree that MTL's recapture is manageable, with it completely disappearing if he is with the team until after the 22-23 season.

Recapture does not go over only 2 years. And as I said, the cost would be much less than 3.33 million in recapture to the jest. Probably closer to 1-2 million. But that’s still a lot for 5 more seasons (recapture goes until the remainder of the contract just like luongo’s contract)

You are flat out wrong about the penalty to the Jets look at the link provided and substitute the Jets for the Habs. If Weber had retired this year the Habs portion of the recapture penalty would have been 542k this year and 214k next year with 0 dollars from 2023-26. Since he has already played the majority of the season you have to go off of next years recapture penalty which for the Habs is 214k. but the above scenario had Weber retiring in 2022-23 season making his recapture penalty to the Habs and by extension the Jets $0 while the Preds are on the hook for 8.19 Mil for 3 years then the remaining 1 Mil is added to the end of the contract in the 26 season. It doesn't matter really how many years that the Preds have to pay back the cap recapture all that matters is that after the 22 season the Habs have nothing in recapture penalties.
