Leafs should not be protecting Dermott over Holl. It will leave a hole on the right side that Liljegren isn't ready to fill yet.

NYI likely won't pay that, and Leafs shouldn't be moving their best defenseman in a year where they should still be contending.

Holl is 29 years old, Dermott is 24. I don’t think it’s the craziest idea to protect Travis over Justin. The fact that Holl is pretty much terrible when he is not paired with Muzzin speaks about his play. And he is way too inconsistent. For the first half the season he looks amazing and now he has come back down to earth and looks like a 6-7th Dman. I’d have no worries if Dubas decided to protect Dermott over Holl.

As for Rielly I agree, but something has to give if the Leafs want to get Sandin in the top 4 next year. Unless he plays the right side with Muzzin, having Jake and Morgan above him on the left side will be tough to find him mins. But trading Morgan for a pick doesn’t make sense

I see what you are saying, but unless you have a viable option to replace Holl right now, you shouldn't move him. He has regressed a little bit, but to me it's not a big deal to leave him with Muzz all the time if it works.

Asking Sandin, who has minimal experience in the NHL, to either take that top spot from Reilly or play top 4 minutes on his off side is a pretty big ask.

No chance Dubas trades Mo, also no chance Foligno resigns, pretty easy to see he's going back to cbj. Also Oilers say no and the Hyman deal is way too big.

Absolutely in no way should Sandin be on the top pair. But I would for sure want him in the top 6. Dermott has looked more than fine playing on the right side, very small sample, but still his upside over Holl would make him an easy pick to protect over Holl. I think Kerfoot gets selected anyways , the D available to Seattle next year is way better than the C’s.

There was also no chance that Pietrangelo would play for any other team but St.L a couple of years ago.

The flat cap is going to force teams to make tough choices. Leafs have Hyman to sign this summer, and fill one spot in the crease. I guarantee there is discussion this summer about what's the best plan with/without Rielly moving forward.

Yes, that trade isn't anywhere close. If Bear were traded I would expect more than a minor league goalie and a second for a young top 4 RD.

And what projects to be a late 2nd at that. Not near enough to grab a young Top 4 RHD on a reasonable RFA contract.
