Both of these trades are stupid for Buffalo. The Sabres can draft a defenseman as effective as Ellis with the draft pick they are handing them in this deal. As much as I like Rust, Olofsson is a 20-30 goal man, which is the most we could hope to get out of Rust anyway. Since Pittsburgh is not giving up a top six forward for draft picks I don’t see a deal with them happening.

I'm not so sure I agree. I guess it depends on what NSH could flip Risto for.

Pens decline, Rust is too valuable and on a good contract

That pick is top 3 guaranteed so that could really help us imo

I see your point, but is even a top 3 pick in this draft worth it? I admittedly haven't followed this year's draft class much at all, but I just keep hearing it's so underwhelming.

Risto isn't as bad as his reputation, but I don't see him being a fit for NSH at all. If Poile isn't able to flip him after this trade, I really don't like it for the Preds.

And the OP has amended the proposal apparently. As I'm writing this, it now stands as Ellis & a 4th, for Risto with 400k retention, and a 2021 2nd. I think it's safe to say that's an easy pass for NSH. Ludicrously low-ball.
