Where to for Andrew Copp

Created by: toque
Team: 2021-22 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 16, 2021
Published: Apr. 28, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Not quite sure what to do with Copp: He's 99% gone this offseason, having gone through arbitration and wanting a large pay increase after putting up a 60 point season over an 82 game schedule.

Lineup reflects trading him away for futures. But what should the Jets do? Expose him in the Seattle draft to avoid having to make a side deal to keep Appleton & Stanley? Trade him for a RHD instead of signing Savard or someone else? Get a LHD and not have one of Stanley or Heinola be regulars? Trade him for a 3rd line checking LW? Try to package him and get a younger Top 6 winger?

Poile won't trade a pick for a depth defenseman when he already has all of these guys for next season (who are all basically NHLer or NHL-ready):

    Josi
    Ellis
    Ekholm
    Fabbro
    Carrier
    Benning
    Borowiecki
    Davies
    Farrance
    potentially Harpur
    potentially Allard

Nashville need a dman to fill an injured reserve spot??

If Winnipeg wants to send 1st and 3rd to protect Stanley and Appleton Seattle is in. They'll never trade a 2nd for Harkins...

I was going off of the fact that he traded for Gusbrandon & claimed Sbisa, wasn't aware NSH had this much depth. As an aside, do you expect Polie to protect 4 D or make a side deal to keep the Top 4?

The Expansion draft trade is modelled on the one Winnipeg did in 2017. In 2017, they swapped 1st round picks with Vegas and gave up a third. In this case, with the Jets pick not going to be in the lottery, I chose to have them essentially trade back a round and add the 3rd again.

NSH has had a lot of injuries to their d-core over the course of the season. Sbisa has basically been on IR ever since coming to NSH -- Borowiecki has been injured for a very long time -- Josi, Ellis, and Ekholm have all spent time on IR -- Fabbro and Carrier are both currently injured. Poile was bacially forced to go out and get some depth on D because our D just can't seem to stay healthy.

For the expansion draft, there really aren't more than (or even) 4 forwards Poile needs to protect, so 4-4-1 makes sense to me.

Forsberg, Arvidsson, Kunin, and one of Jarnkrok/Sissons/Johansen/Duchene

IDK if WPG is Interested in Risto, but he’s the big RHD their fans have been clamoring for. 1 for 1 is probably a good deal.

I’m not sure who would trade for Copp with his arb award, this year is pretty anomalous as far as points go but the arbitrator don’t care. He’s a good 3rd liner but his award for what he bring is going to drive suitors away. Kinda damned if you do, damned if you don’t since you need to QO him if you want to expose him.

Yeah, the Copp scenario is interesting. I wonder if Lowry signing long-term would increase his desire to stay. He certainly could be given a very big pay day.
I wonder if Seattle would give the Jets a pick/asset to leave him unprotected.
Or, Chevy tries to lock him in long term on like a 5/$4.5 considering he plays in all situations and is good defensively. It should be interesting to see

Yea, no thanks. Copp is an RFA and risto is a rental. Copp is our best defensive forward too. He’s more valuable than Risto.

I’m worried he’s gone next year. However, he’s close with the leadership and he’s going to be a top 6 guy long term probably for us. I doubt chevy let’s him go. Anywhere under 5M per and chevy probably does it

He’s got more year and is arb eligible after a statistical outlier of a season....

Copp isn’t as valuable trade wise as you may want. Either QO him for an arb award of at least 4 mil or let him go to UFA. Until he’s signed, teams are gonna be scared by what he could make. They need certainty.

Copp has one more season before being a UFA so this offseason will be interesting.

If Copp wants to go elsewhere for a larger role or more financial security, then this offseason is the time to trade him. If the Jets trade Copp away to get a good player back on his ELC that means they could protect Appleton and then Seattle chooses between Harkins and DeMelo so that means no need for a side deal.

If Copp is open to staying around (Jets buy his last RFA season plus two UFA seasons), then the Jets lose Appleton to Seattle. No need for a side deal as 1st round pick > Appleton.

Still think the move to make is compensate Seattle to take DeMelo and free up that cap space, sign Poolman to a cheap deal to be a 3rd pair dman and sign some other cheap depth RHD for around league minimum, ridiculous we didn't just trade for Savard.

Well he isn't doing much good out there currently, there's better ways to spend $3M for the next three seasons.

Strongly disagree. This is the first season copp has been played in a top 6 role, and his production is showing that. Teams won’t be scared to pay a 50-60 point guy what he’s worth. He’s worth more than one year of risto easily. He’s a high end defensive forward who can score as well. That’s very valuable in today’s nhl.

So if copp is put out on auction whats the price. I get his salary being a bit inflated based on the numbers. What's it going to cost to aquire him. A couple picks, like a low 2nd and a 4th.
