Realistic Roster Building and SEA Expansion Protections for Next Season for SJ

Description
Been seeing a lot of SEA posts and SJ protection posts so thought I'd argue my take.

Some have rightly pointed out that Sharks will likely make maybe a few more trades prior to the deadline to increase their supply of picks, per DW's statements at the trade deadline. I see Donato being dealt, again to the point of the OG poster, that SJ has a plethora of wings and it not only adds SJ a pick, it decreases one extra body to protect.

So after trading Donato for roughly a 3rd, respectfully, I have SJ protecting:

FORWARDS
1. Couture
2. Hertl
3. Kane
4. Meier
5. Labanc
6. Balcers
7. Gambrell

On defense, SJ NEEDS to move Burns and his contract given the plethora of big contracts they already have on the roster, the fact that Burns is still valuable to a team as a good player and logging top-3 in the league TOI minutes each night, Burnzie's age and SJ wanting to reset/rebuilt/be younger, already having EK65, Burnzie himself maybe not minding a shot at the cup elsewhere particularly with BFF Jumbo gone, etc., but mostly for SJ cap reasons.

I have SJ protecting on Defense:
1. Vlasic (NMC)
2. EK65 (NMC)
3. Simek

Sharks should allow Martin Jones to be exposed and protect at goalie:
1. Korenar

SEA's main decision comes down to picking between:
1) Burns in a proposal that sends Gambrell (a Washington state homeboy who'll be a fan favorite because of that and a very good right-handed 4C for them for cheap), who is worth a 2nd, and the 3rd collected from the Donato trade for compensation for the contract, or
2) Martin Jones.

I have them taking the Burns package.

Finally, for the roster building, after the draft, I see the Sharks shipping Simek off with Vlasic already here for that 3rd LH-pairing spot in addition to young depth players like Paschnuk and Kniazev making a push to crack the lineup. I also see them signing Demers as a familiar face and good veteran player on a 1yr deal to play with Vlasic on the bottom pair to finalize the defense.

Center depth is desperately needed on this team. I think the Sharks will be in on Eichel as one of the few teams who can work out the cap side of things with the large contract pretty easily relative to other teams. I think they have some solid pieces to offer up (high 1st round picks, Meier, Labanc/Weisblatt, etc.). This roster is assuming a team like the Kings coughs up a Byfield to get the deal done. I have SJ signing Granlund to a 4yr deal for 5mil per year, a guy who's playing pretty well for Nashville at 2C this season, for their offensive 3C role. I think that line excels on offense with Gregor and Balcers on the wings next season. The 4th line can be a true shutdown line with Nieto, a right-handed defensive vet like Riley Nash to win faceoffs, and a heavy defensive yet skilled guy like Armia at RW -- a perfect fit for SJ's needs.

Detroit isn't trading futures for depth players. Pass.

Interesting, I expected Donato and wasn't sure if it would be Dahlen or Balcers for the final spot but you actually have Gambrell. What are the chances Dahlen is protected? 75%? 95? 60?

This is a pass from wings. We aren't trading draft picks at this time and not trading it for a player that doesn't help them

Yeah, he's not exactly a hot commodity and is totally unproven at anything even close to the NHL level of play. I would be utterly shocked if the Sharks protected him.

So found out that Dahlen in fact does not need to be protected -- he isn't eligible for selection. Balcers trade rescinded and this roster updated.

He needs to play in 27 games to qualify for exposure.

Assuming your protection list: 7-3-1 format

-Couture, Hertl, Kane, Meier, Labanc, Balcers, Gambrell, Vlasic, Karlsson, Simek, Korenar

    Exposed: 2 F (??), 1 D (Burns), 1 G (Jones)

Sharks will need to re-sign two of Donato, Sorensen, Marleau, Nieto (saw a report yesterday SJ may re-sign him so he's probably one of the two Fs) before the draft or trade for a F that meet the requirements.

Everyone else that is not protected, does not meet the requirements and are not exempted will be available. Seattle can select one of them (Donato, Sorensen, True, Halbgewachs, Marleau, Nieto, Letunov, Gabriel, Dahlen, Pateryn, Jaros, Middleton, Meloche). Although it's unlikely it happens, they could do it.

The 2F/1D/1G exposed is only to ensure the quality of players available. Everyone else who has 2+ pro seasons can be selected.

So going with my proposed protections, say SJ resigns Nieto and Donato (or even Sorensen for league minimum) before the draft, is it then that the 27 GR for Dahlen applies and only then that he's no longer exposed for SEA to possible select?

More clearly, imagine Nieto and Sorensen resign. Couture Balcers Gambrell Meier Labanc Hertl Kane are the forwards protected. Is it then that SEA can choose between Jones, Burns, Nieto, or Sorensen? And if Nieto and Sorensen or Donato don't resign by the draft, then other guys like True, Halbgewachs, Letunov, Dahlen and others are exposed?

No, everyone not named Couture, Hertl, Kane, Meier, Labanc, Balcers, Gambrell, Vlasic, Karlsson, Simek, Korenar is eligible to be selected by Seattle. The 27-game requirement is to make sure San Jose expose two NHL forwards and not minors leaguers.

I got caught in this too! The language is super misleading imo, but the key thing is that each team must expose AT MINIMUM 2F/1D/1G who meet the requirements of games played, but anyone with two years or more of professional hockey (NHL, AHL, KHL, Europe, etc) is still up for grabs unless they're one of the players who are explicitly protected.
