Thoughts on buying out Johnson if he does not waive his no move clause for the expansion draft? It would give Colorado the ability to protect Toews, Girad and Makar.

He will waive. And if he doesn't, then yeah buy him out. No questions asked.

Pretty favourable buyout there yeah

With the FA D market being sketchy I'd be reticent

But probably for the best all told

Yup. Sakic has to do what he has to do. Protect Makar, Girard, and Toews at all costs - If EJ gets in the way of that then he's gone

If they buy him out or he becomes available in any way, I bet the jets will be very interested. Instead of buying him out, say take the trade to the jets (Johnson retained 1M for a guy like harkins and a 3rd) or be bought out and lose out on millions.

He may also get LTIR exemption if he misses playoffs.

this would require him waiving his NMC, which if he does, then this acgm doesn't apply

girard, toews, and makar are all, imo, top 10 for norris this year, with makar being 1 and toews 6. no chance EJ is in COL next yr if he doesn't waive for seattle. plus, seattle won't take him. if you protect those 3 dmen, graves is a much better selection. if you protect 4 dmen (graves included), donskooi for example is a much better selection. no chance EJ is selected unless COL pays for seattle to take him, which similarly won't happen

my bad. i assume seattle is on this list, which requires a waive of the m-ntc?
or does seattle not count as one of the teams and it's assumed that he has to waive to be picked?

either way, in that case then yes ship him off to the jets or frankly anyone even moderately interested

It depends on what the clause says.
The notation here, on ACGM, simplifies it.
In reality, they may have detailed clause on type of movements they would do, would not do, including in expansion draft.
If his NMC applies, then they would have to trade for him as compensation for selecting someone else.

Once the league releases the final exemptions list, we will know more. In 2017, there were a number of unexpected names on list.

My scenrio was more a situation of be bought out and lose millions or accept a trade to Winnipeg. That’s if he declines to waive
