Team: 2021-22 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 30, 2021
Published: Apr. 30, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
the rangers can't really afford to take on another big contract (in this case, Pettersson, but applies to guys like Eichel) with all the expiring ELCs (Fox, Kakko, Lafreniere, Miller, Kravtsov). they will have to make some cap room, with Strome or Kreider probably the guys to go. I could honestly see Strome staying longer term just because he won't take the cap hit of a Eichel player and still puts up solid numbers with Artemi. AND Mika is due for a large raise as well

...uhh Strome is a 70+ point C who can PK. You're looking at a lot more than a 2nd for him.

Vancouver matches within 5 minutes. If you want to be serious about actually getting the player, 5x11 is the absolute minimum you’ll have to offer.

Also, you letting zibanejad walk after this season? I don’t see a way to keep fox and zibanejad, while adding a high price center.

Strome has never had 60 points, let alone 70+

I wasn't super set on the numbers, this was more of a general case where the Rangers pursue any big contract center (similar to Eichel), but, to your point, I think that getting a big contract center would not end well because of the ELCs that will need raises (read description please). but yes, I do hope Zibanejad stays, even if that means missing out on a superstar center.

If you landed Pettersson, I'd let Mika walk.

Yeah not sure where that number came from haha, plus he’s literally only ever played well with Panarin, and to be honest, most players probably could put up 50 pts with panarin LOL.

A 2nd for Strome is definitely fair.

As for the rest of the post, Vancouver thanks you and matches. Fox is due for a massive raise. I’m guessing he’ll be asking for 9 million or more on an 8 year deal. Might as well just cash in early. The rangers should just stay pat where they’re at and see how the young guys progress next year, bring in a vet or two for leadership and see how it goes. There’s 0 reason to rush their rebuild.

Or, trade him. He's got a season left on his deal. Could get a big return.

They can't re-sign Mika, Fox, Kakko and Kravtsov with that cap space, Then they have issues with Miller and Lafreniere.

With the new TV deal being 625m (over double what it was previously), Seattle making its final payment today, the cap will be going up significantly once the agreed upon flat cap ends. Even conservative projections have it going up to 100m by 2023. Players will more than likely take team friendly deals for one year to cash in on the next. Either way, fox will 100% take a team friendly deal as the rangers are the only team he wants to play for (he forced his way out of two other teams in order to ensure the rangers).

I believe that fox will sign for the 6.5-8 range for 8 years (or less $ for 5 years) and Zibanejad to be 7-9m for 5-7 years

Apparently you were out of the loop for the conversations regarding how the league returned to play this year. The owners lost money. A lot of money. The cap will likely be flat until 2025. Owners picked up the bill for this season, players are paying for it over the next few years.

I did read the description. When dealing with the concept of an offer sheet, you kinda have to be super concerned with the numbers.

A 2nd for Strome is a lowball offer...yeah he has not had a 60 point season let alone 70 points...but his numbers for the past 2 shortened years point to a 69 and 73 point pace...add to that he plays in all situations. And he's stopped taking the dumb penalties which plagued him earlier in his career...the guy has developed into a legit middle 6 NHLer...and he has played well even w/o Panarin. Strome definitely worth a late 1st + a so-so prospect or a pair of seconds and a decent prospect.

Strome without panarin is a 3C. Panarin is the only reason he’s even sniffing the top 6.

If you're trying to throw a wet blanket on Strome's value...not working- even if he were a 3C....several 3rd liners have been traded for 1st round picks the past few years...Goodrow, Coleman, and Pageau come to mind.

Let’s also remember the circumstances surrounding those deals. Tampa was all in and moved 2 1sts for 2/3 of those guys. Islanders also desperately needed C depth and overpaid.

You’ll need almost perfect circumstances to get a 1st. A 2nd a 3rd is more than fair value.

I thought it was already announced 84-88M for next season, so slight increase anyway... 100M he cited doesnt seem too near atm though

Incorrect. Cap will remain the same next year. 81.5. Likely to remain at that for a few years. Probably until 2025.

Circumstances for sure are part of any trade...as it's the market which ultimately sets the value. I guess i'll leave it at a 2021 2nd is a bit light...I'd keep Strome if thats whats out there and take my chances either extending (if a reasonable deal can be reached) or moving at TDL. 2022 supposed to be a much deeper draft anyway.

Ya, the date kinda pops up after reading the story, I got caught to lol.
Check out "Leafs Nation - When will the cap go up". Ps if u find better info let me (everybody) know. Internet & cf full of dreamy misinformation lol.
I predict: Flat, Flat, 2m, 3m, then big 5.5m ???
