Targets for next years back up

Created by: treemos27
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 30, 2021
Published: Apr. 30, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Hyman: I think Dubas will try to get him on a 5 year deal or try to sneak him in at under 5 mill, but I think they are more than comfortable giving him 30m/6 if it comes to that.

Foligno: May or may not re-sign and a lot depends on the playoffs, but I think if the Leafs offer a competitive multi-year offer, Foligno will have to consider. Contend for a cup for a couple years or scrape and claw for a playoff spot back with CLB.

Kerfoot: Simply has to go because of cap. Similar to the Kapanen, Johnsson situation. Can probably get more than a 5th, but the point is we just get rid of him for the best package available.

Dermott/Holl: I think it'll be either Holl or Dermott taken by Seattle. I think for the Leafs you are fine losing either and whichever stays can play with Muzzin or move to the 3rd pair if/when Sandin/Liljegren progress.

Goalie targets:
- Ben Bishop
- Anton Khudobin
- Casey Desmith
- Joonas Koorpisalo
- Darcy Kuemper
- Petr Mrazek (FA)

Some will require hefty packages and retained salary.
Who is your top choice to be in net for the Leafs? Either as a starter, 1B, or full on back up to Campbell depending on how the playoffs go.

P.S Can go a number ways with the bottom 6 Centres:
Option 1: Make modest but competitive offers to players like Granlund, Haula, Bonino, Riley Nash, etc.
Option 2: Give opportunity internally to Brooks, Steeves, SDA, Hallander, etc for the 3rd and 4th line roles.
Option 3: Shift Foligno to 3rd C and Brooks to 4th C. If no Foligno we could keep Kerf or make a strong offer to Granlund.

I could see Pens potentially interested depending on cap situation.

Jake-Sid-Rust
McCann-Malkin-Kap
Zucker-Kerfoot-Carter
Tanev-Bluegar-ZAR

And lose MP to SEA

We could just resign freddie for 3.5 x 1 or 2 to see what he has left

Besides Mrzak, the goalie targets with term or cap isn't all that impressive. If you want to go with that lineup, obviously you're looking at just 1.5m signings to the fill the remaining positions.

If he willing to take something like that I would do it. But he'd be coming in as a 1B, not the starter. Not sure how he feels about that.

I think these are some attractive options for a 1B goalie tbh..
Desmith or one of Dallas' goalies seem like really good options imo

For starters Kerfoot is not a cap dump IMO. He will most likely be selected by Seattle so that gives you the cap space you want. As for goalie options I would be surprised to see Dubas give a 3rd rounder away to not resign Rittich. Sign him to a 1 year deal. But Remier could be a nice option too, Driedger, and Forsberg.

instead of getting a 5th from minny, as you've said, send kerf to seattle. that way we can keep a
rielly - brodie
muzzin - holl
sandin - dermott
bogo - liljegren

next season. also i like driedger a lot and wouldn't be object to bringing fred back on a 1 x 3.5 or something like that

Agree to all that but no chance Fred is back, especially if it is to be the backup or 1B. He needs and the Leafs need a fresh start. Go with Campbell and Rittich IMO

I think Kerfoot will be the Seattle pick.
Other teams will likely offer better D options over Dermott and Holl for them.

I think Leafs will look at Ullmark and go could target either Columbus goalie via trade.

What about Vanecek? Heard Capitals definitely want to move him in trade rather than lose him to Seattle.

While young he has potential.

Yeah, maybe. Was Johnsson a cap dump? Its a similar situation.
Personally I'd be surprised if Seattle took Kerfoot. I would take Dermott or Holl if I was them.

I guess I'd be ok with Rittich if he signed a 1 year deal on the cheap.
I'd just be concerned about wasting the team we have if ou goaltending isn't good enough. If we have full faith in Campbell then I guess its fine, but I would personally like to see a highger quality back up option if Campbell isn't up to the task.

Its not just about being good enough.. Its about being amongst the best in the league so we can win a cup. Campbell has been amazing this year and if he can keep this going for the long term we are in great shape

Kerfoot is a solid NHL player and he’s contract pretty much market value for a 3rd line C that can play up and down the lineup plus the wing. Johnsson was definitely a cap dump and his play this year shows that. IMO not the same at all. It is still shocking to me that if rumours where true and a Johnsson + Dermott for Weegar was on the table Dubas didn’t act on it, but that’s over with.

I’m fine with any of Rittich, Remier, Bernier, or any other goalie that comes in with a low cap hit around 1-2 mil. I’m very comfortable going into next season with Campbell.
