2 things here that I think you've overlooked and frankly a lot of people overlook on this site:
1. In regards to Merzlikins moving from Columbus, I really believe it's likely that he's the guy moved this off-season and Toronto did inquire about him at the deadline. However Columbus, and in particular, Kekalainen, made it clear that the price isn't cheap. The rumoured report at the deadline was that Columbus asked Toronto for a top prospect (turned out to be Timothy Liljegren), a good goalie prospect (Joseph Woll) and a 1st round pick. That's A LOT for a guy currently with 58 games of NHL experience. But I don't think Columbus would move him for a cheap price since he's exempt from the exapnsion draft if he was moved at the deadline. But I also think they'll stick to their ask in the off-season and look for more of a young NHL ready forward with upside to make a substantial impact on a roster in the long term. & I don't think Kerfoot or Anderson meet that criteria.
2. I'm really not sure why people are dumping on Morgan Rielly all of a sudden. He's been exactly what he's always been this year, which is an elite puck moving defenseman that generates offence from the back end. Toronto doesn't have another player in the organization like him. Some might want to argue that Sandin can take his place because Sandin is more reliable in his own end, but relax Sandin has only played 34 career games and defense is typically a position that goes throw a lot of growing pains due to the demand of the position. Sandin is also no where near the type of puck mover that Rielly is, so my biggest argument against moving Rielly is that if you do it and don't bring in another elite puck moving defenseman in the deal, watch this team go from a top of the league offence to a middle of the pack offence real quick. Rielly's been a leader on this team since the day he came in and he's played the exact same way he always has and people now start to **** on him when the team's good. It's ridiculous.
Frankly, IMO the team that you've constructed wouldn't make it out of the first round (again) if they even made it to the playoffs. It's a fringe playoff team and I'm sure management isn't looking to regress its roster.
