Next year with a competent coach

Created by: bunzy1034
Team: 2021-22 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: May 1, 2021
Published: May 1, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
First things first. This team will always be mediocre until Maurice is gone. Replace him with Gallant. Gallant would do wonders for the amount of talent that is on this roster. Second, actually make a hard push for a defenceman that will make a SUBSTANTIAL impact, not just minimal. If that means overpaying a little bit, so be it at this point.

Expansion protection:
F: Ehlers, Scheifele, PLD, Connor, Copp, Lowry, Appleton; ask wheeler to waive his NMC.
D: Pionk, DeMelo, Stanley
G: Hellebuyck
Seattles Options:
Wheeler (Old and Bad contract) Morrissey (Has been real bad for 2 seasons now and bad contract), Niku, Harkins. Harkins seems like the right guy.

That is one expensive 3rd line...

But in genuine curiosity, is Vesalainen ready for that role?

I've liked his game in pretty much every game I've seen. He's strong on the puck. Maurice just doesn't give him a shot. Also yeah that third line is expensive, but Copp and Lowry are good players, and Wheeler would likely do much better in a reduced role because he has struggled all season long

Wow

1. Wheeler is still playing at almost a point per game, is the clear leader of the team still, and Jets fans can't stop hating on him.
2. Vesalainen is not ready I don't think for top 6 yet. Maybe for spurts next year if he shows up.
3. That's not an overpay on Hamilton. His value is going to be AT LEAST $8.5 million as a UFA, likely more in the bidding war.
4. Josh Morrissey hasn't been good, but he has not been terrible. He hasn't put up numbers, but he's a pretty talented two-way defenseman who will absolutely be protected over DeMelo. Later on in his tenure his contract actually might be more valuable relative to the cap.

Wheeler is literally the worst defensive forward in the league this season. I don't think it's a stretch to say he isn't as good as he used to be, and he has dragged lineups in the top 6 down. Vesa is interesting but I like his game and would like to see a more spread out approach in the lines instead of just a hard top 6, bottom 6. I do agree that Dougie probably could and should get more in FA, I would be willing to pay that. Josh Morrissey has been ruined for the past couple of years playing with absolute anchors such as Poolman and Beaulieu. Some of the blame has to be put on him, but I do believe that he isn't this bad, and a partner as good as Hamilton with a system change will make him really good again.

Dunn is a player the jets should 100% be targeting this offseason.

Samberg and a 2nd is a gross overpayment for a 3rd pairing d-man

Hamilton would be great , but even a dunn-pionk, morrissey-demelo is good enough to be a cup contender. I’d trade for him and try to sign him for 3-5 years at a bargain cap hit like the panthers/avs did with weegar and toews

Nope. Average number 4-5 d-man that plays 18 minutes a game

I like this a lot. God a lot of our issues would be solved with Maurice being gone.

Chevy needs to throw the kitchen sink at dougie if he gets to FA. No more of these 6-7 dman. Honestly if Chevy stays patient again, I could see his job being in jeopardy. Just keep his scouting staff LOL.

Anyways, wheeler needs to be on the 3rd line. Vesalainen has looked awesome with Dubois, would like to see them stay together. The d core you have here is awesome, much better than anything we’ve had since 17-18.

I agree man, I think a fresh outlook and spreading out talent could do wonders for the Jets in the future!

Pardon the intensity here but if someone has even a but of respect for analytics they'd value him much more than that: he destroys sheltered deployment

That puts him as a fringe top pair D all told

From age 21-24 no less

😯

In those 18 minutes you reference he averages a 30 point pace which is also super impressive... combine that with his very acute electric skillset... jeepers

Where a player gets played =/= where he should

Especially young players

So many get tangled up in highly competitive depth charts or stuck behind big NTC contracts too I mean the results they put up truly are the key naturally

Yeah a lot of isles fans said toews was nothing more than a 2nd pairing D man just because he played 2nd pairing minutes. Clearly that isn’t the case

Yeah this is a pipe dream, but I mean he did say he isn’t the biggest fan of huge markets, and the Jets could definitely afford to overpay him

I'm not the biggest Samberg fan but think it's pointless to trade him for Dunn when Heinola is already a top 4 dman.

Think it'd be better to compensate Seattle to take DeMelo and open up that cap space to take a run at Hamilton.

The blues aren't doing that and with it being within the division, that price goes way up.
