Next Year vol 3 Chill tf Out

Created by: ChrisPy97
Team: 2021-22 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: May 2, 2021
Published: May 2, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is the third time I've done this, without a lot of variation, and it is mostly in response to some outright silly propositions I've seen.

1. Tkachuk and Batherson should get long-term contracts. They have great chemistry, both project as 60-70pt scorers, and (this is kudos to another sens fan on here who set me straight on Batherson specifically) short term deals at their age, unless kept to 2-3 years with Tkachuk, walk them RIGHT TO UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENCY. PLUS...these contracts, in a (eventually) growing cap will be great value down the line.

2. Zub is a quality top-4 defenseman, who will likely get at least $3-4 million, so stop signing him to dinky little $2 million contracts.

3. Stop signing so many vets! What have you not learned from this year!?!? Let the kids play and work it out and they'll excel. Minimal signings only just to fill spots as needed or as depth pieces. Additionally, taking up cap space right before players like Brännström, Norris, Formenton, and Paul get new contracts is short-sighted.

4. I think too many Sens fans still don't think Norris can be a 1C, but I absolutely think he can be a Bergeron/Couturier style 1C, which is more than adequate, especially when you're flanked by some solid wingers. I think the below C depth is great going forward, and I'm okay with keeping Stützle on the Wing. I think having him and Tkachuk there is championship-level depth in a couple years.

5. I perhaps am naïve in my optimism around Murray - I just think he had a terrible start, and hasn't had a consistent chance to reform himself due to injury. I still wouldn't protect him, since I don't think Seattle will take him, but I absolutely think he's the 1G next year.

6. On that note, Gustavsson's play this year has made me really excited, and as much as I love Daccord, I do think Gustavsson might deserve the backup spot more next year, since he's younger and might be our future Juuse Saros or something of the like. At the same time, if neither get picked, I'd be okay with them circulating backup duties. This is also because I want Mandolese and Søgaard to both get reps in Belleville next season.

7. Finally, I'm terrified of Seattle taking Nick Paul more than anyone else - I don't know why so many people (not on this site but professionally) think he's being exposed. He's such a great two-way energy player and those are not easy to come by, especially home-grown. Pay Seattle if we have to to take flippin' Tierney or Watson off our hands.

Not quite sure he'll get this much, but I'm hesitant to trade for another player unless we get a potential roster player back, but Minnesota's 2nd won't be too high and they're in need of C depth even with Rossi.

Let's call him Flippin' Tierney from now on ✔

This is generally quite well done and tactful

What's the case for Zub deserving more than ~2M$?

His underlying numbers have been pretty stellar, he's only 25, and I think he's comparable to some other defensemen earning around the same amount. I think if we give him only $2 million, he demands a shorter term, and he's more likely to walk sooner. This way we have him locked up in the competition window, and not before it.

    1. True
    2. Also true
    3. Dorion please listen to #3
    4. Can the team win a cup with Norris as the 1C? We can cross that bridge when we get there but there’s no reason Norris can’t be the 1C going into next season.
    5. His contract dictates he’s the 1G so Dorion and DJ will play him as such, hopefully he can turn it around tho!
    6. 100% confident with Gus and Dac as the 2&3. I think I heard someone say the taxi squad isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. No reason there can’t be fluidity between the press box and the bench l.
    7. Ive noticed Paul being left off some protections lists as well. I just chalk it up to a bit of ignorance. In a lot of cases it is their job but we can’t expect experts to be on top of every team all the time. Paul will be protected and I’m sure as we get closer to the expansion draft we’ll see him on more “expert” protection list projections.

Loved the breakdown, gave me a great little read over lunch!!

You can keep dreaming. Logan brown sucks, can't even make Ottawa, & to think he's better than rossi or wild give up a 2nd round pick for him is comical

You have no idea what the heck you are talking about. Wild aren't desperate. Logan brown who can't even play on Ottawa isn't getting a player back, or a 2bd round pick. Logan brown won't play on wild over Joel Eriksson Ek, Marco rossi, Alexander khovanov, or marat Khusnutdinov @ChrisPy97

    Wild say heck no

This proposal is so very comical.

    1. That would be ideal but the trend is players betting on themselves. Wouldn't shock me if both, but especially Tkachuk opted for a bridge deal to increase his value to the team and in the league in general. His point totals will probably go up and he would be in line for a big pay day in 2 to 3 years. I don't think he would sign an 8 year 8 mil like Chabot did... I think he would want more. But I would love to be wrong

    2. Zub is good, but Zaitsev had a good 1st year too. I think it's smarter to be thinking shorter term so he can prove it.

    3. Certainly not as many, but they have to sign some. Find a hungry bottom 6 and 3rd pair D player.

    4. Norris has looked awesome. I think we will know next year where he stands as a 1 or 2C

    5. This is where I must step in and disagree lol. Yes it's naïve optimism. I didn't care that the price was low. I hated getting Murray, in fact he was the one goalie I hoped they wouldn't get. He's a shoe in to get hurt for multiple weeks, sometimes months per year. I have a buddy that trains OHL/Euro players, and is a big Pens fan. He told me about Murray's injuries 3 years ago and that with how he plays and his body type he will get hurt every year. He has been spot on

    6. Gustavsson has been impressive. I love how he's progressing in the last year. Another reason I didn't want Murray was so they didn't handcuff themselves in goal for a few years and they could try out the young guys to see what they have. Stability in goal was a nice thought, but I thought leaving the net up for grabs within the organization was the best move. I like when an organization rewards their hard working prospects and gives them opportunities.

    7. Never pay Seattle. I can't stress that enough lol. Let them take who they are going to take. No need to give them more than one asset. I like your protection list, it's identical to mine but I think they do protect Zaitsev and not Brown. Seattle will either take Tierney, Daccord, Murray or L. Brown. None of those players are integral to the future of the Sens and there isn't anyone going to hamper the team long term, So there is no need to pay Seattle to take a specific player or not take one imo.
