How to Repeat V2

Created by: darrylking
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 3, 2021
Published: May 3, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
V1 was based on a trade that the Rangers would never make.
V2 is based on the same premise: Sandin looks awesome and that allows us to pivot from Rielly a year earlier in order to free up some cap space and strengthen the bottom 6. I think that this is a more realistic scenario: Rielly would help the Flyers at a position of need and they're likely ready to turn the page on Patrick. They get a decent bottom 6 C back in Engvall as well.
I'm assuming that we loose Dermott in the expansion draft (but if we chose to protect him we'd loose Holl and go with Bogosian on the second pair).

I like the idea on that philly trade but leafs are getting robbed on that deal imo. Also i have no idea how well Rielly can play RD bc our LD is good enough for next year with Provorov, Sanheim and York

Patrick is a band-aid. I’d be very surprised if the Leafs trade Rielly.

He really hasn't played on the right side very much.

I know that it doesn't seem like a lot, but I'm trying to work in the expansion draft factor here. There might be a lot of teams that would like Morgan Rielly, but fewer that are going to pay for his last year prior to UFA, and fewer still that are in a position to protect him in the draft. TBH he has a 10-team no trade list, but I'm guessing that Philly wouldn't be on it.

If I'm the Leafs I'd be good with those players in the deal and then push for better draft picks or a prospect to improve the return (Bobby Brink seems like a Dubas guy; or Foerster / Zamula)

Look at it this way: worst case scenario he performs about what Engvall has done for us over the past two seasons. He's 22 and has a good chance to outperform what he's done this year (during which his PDO has been 90.5).

So worst case you get a younger version of Engvall, a cheap 25-year old forechecking specialist, cap space to spend as you see fit, futures, and can keep Holl in the expansion draft.

    1. They can already protect Holl. They’ll protect 4 forwards and 4 defense. And expose Kerfoot and Dermott.

    2. The worst case scenario is he continues to get hurt all the time.

    I don't think that they're exposing Kerfoot.

Okay - so he gets hurt all the time and we just release him. This version of the team has enough cap space to go sign Blake Coleman or Mikael Granlund and you can shift Kerfoot back to C.
