I can't see either Saad or Hyman going from a top contender to the bottom of the league, unfortunately.

Maybe they want to be big fish in a small pond lol - any players who get Sabres to playoffs will be treated like gods

I can see Winnipeg having interest in Ristolainen, but only at a reasonable price. This isn't it, so the Jets would say no.

I can see Winnipeg moving back from #21 to #33 for Ristolainen (although I wouldn't do it), but not adding in a top prospect, too.

Well the Sabres wouldn't be just giving him away either. we'd need more value then moving up 12 spots in the draft.

Buffalo might have interest in trading Risto if they have no chance of bringing back McCabe. Risto is a completely different player when paired with McCabe, or I suppose another defensively responsible defenseman.

Ironically the Sabres have a ton of left-handed defenseman coming up and ready to play in the NHL. For the last couple of years they have been playing right handed defensemen on the left side because they didn’t have enough left handed shots. After this season the opposite appears to be true. Ristolainen is one of the few right handed defenders under contract for next season. Miller is another, and most expect Seattle to want him. Will Borgen is an RFA, as is Jokiharju. But other than that the Sabres don’t have other right handed defensemen with NHL experience.

Ristolainen is a one-year rental with a huge cap hit in a flat-cap world, and there are doubts about his defensive prowess, to put it gently. I can't see him bringing more than that.

We can retain some salary, but 12 spots in the draft is almost nothing. Especially going from 31 to 19, hypothetically

If you are a Sabres fan it's because he is one of the very few Sabres who will make an opponent keep his head on a swivel - if you want to take the position than his negatives exceed his positives that's fair but he's probably the Sabres player most brought up in trades by other GMs after Eichel - I guess the weird thing is the guy has a lot of talent but at times just seems to go blank out on the ice - I use to have a dream that they diagnose him with adult ADHD give him the proper meds and he becomes a high level D-man.

I guess the question becomes will Ristolainen be able to put it all together consistently or after 8 seasons in the NHL will any changes in his game be small and what price would a GM want to pay for that?
