Just trade one of Kakko or Lafreniere for a top-tier center.

I feel like that defeats the whole purpose. They should use their picks/prospects to get one but it wouldn't be petterson, the canucks would match that

Zib wouldn’t be resigned if that was the case, but it doesn’t matter cause we wouldn’t offer sheet anyone anyway.

They have 5+ top-six wingers to fill four spots and no 1C. They could acquire a top quality center if they were to move one of those guys. Not sure how that defeats the purpose.

Moving Kakko or Laf defeats the purpose when those are the guys we’re building around.

They should focus on keeping Zibanejad and make a run at RNH this summer, that'll give them 2 borderline 1/2C's. If Lafreniere and Kakko turn out as good as ppl think they can, that'll be more than enough.

They have $3 Mil in cap space in this scenario.
They save $1.5 from buyouts
All of their expiring UFA and RFA contracts clears 21M in cap space

In total, 25.5 Mil to resign Kravtov, Kaako, Zibanejad, Strome, Georgiev, Calvert, Poolman, Merill, Blackwell, Gauthier and Rooney

Kaako = 4.5 bridge deal
Zibanejad = 8
Kravtsov = 3 bridge deal
Fox = 9

Already they are at the limit and still have to pay 3 forwards, 2 dman, and a backup goalie

Not to mention, but the contracts you gave in year one are unrealistic
Shesterkian gets 4.5x2 minimum on a bridge deal and it would cost 6.5+ to lock him up long term. Buch and Chytil each get 1-2 M more.

Not to mention they still have to pay bonesus

So, no they won't have enough money if they OS Pettersson kid

Bonafide 1Cs are much harder to come by than wingers. With a tradeable asset like Lafreniere or Kakko, NY could land themselves one of the good ones and move Zib to 2C where he is better suited. They'd be one of the strongest teams down the middle and at the wings if they went this route.

RNH doesn't move the needle very much IMO.

I don't disagree with your premise, but Kakko hasn't done anything to warrant himself anything remotely close to a $4.5M bridge deal. His production is in line with Adrian Kempe, who got a 3 year $2M AAV bridge deal. Unless his production explodes next year, I think his extension will be similar.

Im assuming he has a good year next year which is why I said 4.5. But I do agree if he will get around 2 M bridge deal if he plays similar to this year

Are the other contracts good?

If he plays like this year expect around 3, considering hes already elite defensively

Well if it's true that a bona fide 1C is much harder to find than a centre, why would a team give a 1C up for a winger? And how many "bona fide" 1c's are there that even have a remote chance of being traded? The Canucks want to contend, so Petterson isn't going anywhere. The Sabres would probably rather keep Eichel, or if they have to trade him, send him to the west coast and a team like the Kings. That's the caliber of player I'd be looking for if I was the Rangers.

Kakko was a 2nd overall pick... that alone is enough to warrant a decent contract. At least $4m
