ok but what if Detroit just takes on all the salary

Created by: MelonVK

Description
I'm not sure why they're not going harder for this. I'm not sure why they bought out Abdelkader to cripple their cap space over time when they had it short-term.

I've tried to lean these trades pretty heavily in the other team's favor, but of course someone will call me biased and a homer for Detroit - a team I don't care about. The one I'm not sure of is the Edmonton one - not sure how they feel about Bear, but thinking he might be exposed to Seattle, I think this might be a trade worth considering.

Edmonton will expose Caleb Jones not Bear. If Detroit is taking James Neal then they should get a first round pick at least plus a prospect.

I just dont see them taking on huge salary from multiple spots. Even in Detroit whos not a cheap franchise they just arent going to eat millions just to lose too. Neal or clutterbuck I get they can have a role in the line up but guys like ericsson or Myers I just dont think so. I certainly can't see wahlstrom or hoglander being sacrificed by thier teams.

OP was very overt in saying they ~should~ do it

Surely they could see the benefit though?

Wahlstrom, Hoglander, Bear, 1st, etc.

Too many of those deals have too many years left. I'm all for loading up picks to take the 1 year cap dump of guys like Komarov, Eriksson, Subban or taking Gardiner (2 years left, but I think still has something left in the tank and it's not crazy high cap).

But guys like Myers or Ladd, no thanks.

Yes except these deals dont really happen. We all thought this team would be more aggressive taking on contracts for picks but its pretty obvious they arent going to eat dead cap. I can only assume they're pinching pennies for times down the road.

I put an arbitrary max of 3 years - anyone Detroit drafts this year won't make any real money before Myers is up. Neal and Ladd are the only ones with 2 years left I think - which overlaps with Larin, Höglander, Wahlstrom etc.

I think Vancouver is the exact type of team that would stupidly sacrifice true talent to get out of Bennings own mistakes. The Islanders I could almost even motivate doing so - they're currently competing.

I figured the extra year of Neal might be worth DeKeysers salary, since you're approaching this from different angels it feels like it might be an okay idea.

Yeah you gotta be able to criticize GM's for what they're *not* doing as well as what they are doing. Even if Yzerman has done some things well he could still do more.

Or teams are holding out for Seattle to take on their bad contracts, and when they don't they might look to Detroit in even greater desperation

Yeah I think you can get something from the islanders or canucks but not to the degree you want. Deals like that islanders one just dont happen. Plus this team has shown it isn't going to take dead cap. Whatever the reason which is probably just financial they arent doing it.

To be honest id rather we use some of the extra picks we have to steal players from these teams before Seattle robs them. Graves, vanecek, dunn, this is the real opportunity this offseason.

Neal is an interesting sell hard to judge this years performance COVID kicked his butt before the season even started then he got another illness like right afterwards threw off his conditioning. I can’t see oilers paying to remove him and will certainly be protecting bear.

A lot of things don't work "by taking on salary".
Myers has a NTC which might affects things. But what an awful scenario you bring to your fans and players by taking on 6m X 3 for a player you don't really want.
Ericsson, I could see and his one year deal, might be a trade possibility.
Ladd certainly isn't waiving his NMC so you can bury him in the minors.

Yeah, possibly. Or Ladd waives for lower taxes. Same with Myers. I think fans are smart enough to understand Höglander is worth it - and if not, they're dumb enough to think Myers is good.

Edmonton has no reason to pay a 1st to get rid of Neal. They can buy him out for just a $1.9M cap hit and that's not worth a 1st let alone a prospect too. They have plenty of cap space starting this summer.

So Detroit's the one that's taking on expensive cap dumps? And yet we're the ones retaining, Yeah don't think so.

Rather be bad than get assets to become good, right?
