Monahan and Bogosian

Created by: Claesson4Norris
Team: 2021-22 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: May 4, 2021
Published: May 4, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Just an idea about how Ottawa might go about their off season, based on what Garrioch said they might look to add.

Also I think Parker Kelly is a dark horse to push for a roster spot next year.

Disagree completely on Kelly, but don't hate the Monahan trade, depending on what Calgary plans to do to retool.

Flames decline they are going to be trading roster players for prospects because they aren’t going to do a rebuild until sutters gone. Management isn’t going to bring sutter out of retirement to start a rebuild after him being here for 20 games.

I don't really think this is a purely rebuilding move. White can come in and help right away, and brings built in chemistry and connections with a lot of the lineup. They get a good D prospect and a solid pick too, but those assets can easily be used to make a roster addition instead. I think this is what a retooling deal looks like.

I think I'd have Crookshank and Greig and maybe even Sokolov ahead of Parker Kelly BUT... I love the Clark Bishop signing. Too many people picking Amadio and Dzingel as guys to keep - I prefer Bishop.

I think Kelly is really highly thought of internally. As a 13th forward I think he makes way more sense than any of the prospects you mentioned. I'd like to see those guys too, but they probably are better served growing in the AHL/WHL. Maybe they sign Amadio or someone else to be the extra forward, but if they want to promote internally Kelly is the guy.

It might make them better in the future but the next two years while sutter is here it makes them a worse team

Getting worse on paper is basically unavoidable for Calgary this offseason. If they're going to shake things up, they're not going to get equal NHL ready value back right away.

The thing I’m saying is that they won’t make a big shake up because they want to see what sutter can do.

You think they run it back with this group? I can't imagine that's the case.this group has underperformed for such a long time, and it's not like they've even been so good under Sutter to really warrant giving them another season. I think they would really benefit from a fresh look.

If by this you mean Parker Kelly can come in and be a reliable guy DJ trusts to put out there playing bottom 6 minutes, whereas Greig, Sokolov and Crookshank should be playing bigger minutes because their ceilings are potentially hight than Kelly - yes, I can understand that.

2018-19 they were 2nd in the league and lost to Colorado who had just got makar and is now on of the best teams in the league and sutter has really improved this team they have the highest expected goals for since April 14, if this was a full 82 game season the flames would most likely make the playoff and if this was a normal season and the flames are in the pacific they would be in the playoffs. The flames won’t make a big move this year

Yeah. Not suggesting he's going to be a better player, but I think he's not that far off from being an NHL caliber player. I think he fits the style of what DJ and the Sens like in depth players. He's definitely a huge dark horse and I'm not saying he's definitely going to be on the NHL roster or anything, I just like the skillset he brings and would like to see it.

I think Greig has an outside shot at the opening night lineup as the 4C, but I'm not sure that's what's best for him. Ideally he'd be in Belleville, but that's not an option. Probably back with Brandon and playing at the WJC. Sokolov will play NHL games next year imo, but it will be hard to push through as a full time Right winger next year, given how much DJ likes Watson. Crookshank is really good, but needs more than part of a season of AHL prep.

I actually think the Flames WILL make a big move this year. Monahan and Tkachuk have underperformed and Gio is regressing. Hiring Sutter is a go-for-it move for the 3 years we have him, and this team clearly isn’t built for playoff success. I think Treliving’s job is also on the line here pretty soon, he’s been around for 7 years and has 1 playoff round victory and is on pace for his 3rd playoff miss. I would be surprised if he doesn’t make a big move to try and get something working, or he might be out of here next. Sutter is definitely his last ditch coaching hire, if Sutter gets fired they’re going together.

As for the trade, I think this actually makes perfect sense for both teams. The Sens could use a veteran centre with some talent. The Flames get younger, add a much needed right shot to their top 9, lose a little bit of offensive talent, but with a bounce back from Gaudreau/Tkachuk and the continued development of Dube/Mangiapane, their wingers should be able to carry some of the offensive load, and they also cut a little bit of cap, allowing them to get some wiggle room to maybe go for someone in free agency. On top of that they pick up another pick to add to their barren prospect pipeline and a solid RD prospect, which is something that is especially lacking (Kinnvall and Boltmann aren’t inspiring much confidence for the post-Tanev world yet, and we don’t even have a short-term 3RD lol. That would be a good enough return, but Logan Brown is a high upside guy who just needs a shot somewhere, and the Flames have a distinct lack of high end center depth, so they can afford to give him a shot in a position to succeed (although I will admit, Sutter doesn’t seem like the kind of coach that would allow L. Brown to flourish...). I think it actually makes a lot of sense for both teams, and is probably the most the Flames could expect to get for Monahan in an effective shakeup.

I was thinking White + Thomson + Daccord (rather than L Brown) + a pick for Monahan. (Almost identical cap hit) Calgary needs goaltender depth and Ottawa could lose Daccord in the Seattle draft. L Brown as Ottawa's 13th forward? He is due for some good luck.

I would be sad to see Joey go, but I'd do it. I included Logan Brown as a throw in more than anything. I think he will figure it out in a new environment, but I don't think he has much trade value for Ottawa anymore. Adding him as a part of a major trade like this at least let's the team save face. He's probably not a great fit for Sutter hockey though. Seattle taking Brown would be good for Ottawa. Let's them still trade Tierney.

Not really any interest in Monahan at that price.

Monahan doesnt fit the culture that OTT has been vocal about building, and that is a prohibitively expensive offer for a player who doesnt drive play himself and who is pending UFA and will want to get paid.
