Interesting. I guess the failed Lehtonen and Barabanov experiments didn't hurt the Leafs rep

Is this the annual KHL signing for the Leafs?

We've had the likes of Zaitsev, Mikheyev, Ozhiganov, Barabanov, Lehtonen etc.

Right?!?! This boggles the mind. Good signing for TOR, but a bad decision by Semyonov

Those guys still got their foot in the NHL door and seem to be doing well in their new homes. The Leafs did their job even if they didn't make it full-time with the Leafs.

This guys skillset are more suited to a bottom six role. Good at faceoffs and forechecking and can play on the PK.

But from the player point of view...did they??? If I'm signing as a free agent...wouldn't I want to search for a team that would provide at least a little assurances of NHL ice time. Lehtonen played 9 games out of 28. That's a fail in my book. I don't subscribe to the arsonist/fire fighter analogy of...well at least they traded him. He could have gone to CBJ before the season started.

Maybe no other time gave then any offers or even interested and only after seeing the few games they played with Toronto became interested. It may have been the only available step in the door to the NHL

I mean seems good enough, pretty risk free. Tradeable if he doesn't pan out with the leafs.

Will likely be another 4th liner/13th forward, but it's worth the risk.

Probably. I think this contract is worth it because the Leafs have a good record with KHL players. Of the 5 players you mentioned the Leafs traded 3, lost Ozhiganov to free agency, and Souperman is playing in a shutdown role on the Leafs 3rd line.

Guys, the Leafs have consistently done right by their overseas signings. It's not like they're lying to these guys to get them to come over. They know what's up.

was not on my radar for KHL targets as I thought he was going to stay with Avangard

good thing I was wrong

Kid can play well and his team recently won the KHL's equivalent to the Stanley Cup so not bad

Plus he knows and has played with Mikheyev in the KHL so added bonus lul

Sure at times makes some bad passes but Keefe and his team can work on that

In general there is gonna be a war for the 3c spot between Kerfoot, Semyonov, and Steeves and I am all for it as competition brings the best out of people

Not sure that's fair to say.
Leafs have given the likes of Barabanov, Lehtonen, etc... a chance to be on the NHL team and when they couldn't they traded them to another team.
They did right by them.

If the Leafs and held on to those players and not played them, then you have a point.

I think 3rd liner. I think the leafs are planning for Kerfoot to get taken by Seattle and make Semyonov his replacement. Makes sense as Mikheyev is playing on the third line and Semyonov played with him when both were in the KHL

when u know Dan Milstein (KHL Player agent) and after what Dubas did for Mikheyev why not

cheap ELC deals, potential Dimond in the ruff why not

like sure Lehtonen and Barabanov did not work with us due to having way to much depth but Dubas recognized this immediately and took action to keep his promise and get them NHL playing time. Like look at Barabanov in 5 sharks games has 2 goals and 3 assists lul and has made an impact to the point where they plan on extending him. Lehtonen I think chose the wrong year to come to the NHL. Some preseason games would have really helped him settle in and improve his game. Columbus should maybe sign him to a league min deal next year and see if he rebounds cause I still think hes got the potential to be the guy he was in the KHL

So far records been

Zaitsev (Tie) - good year 1, meh year 2 and 3, kind of rebounded in Ottawa
Ozhiganov (L) - did not adapt to the NHL
Barabanov (Tie)- was arguably one of the hardest working leafs and wish he got a goal with us or a reg spot but we had to much depth and keefe was not pulling Spezza, Thorton, or Simmonds, but with the sharks it has been a nice rebound
Lehtonen (L for now) - he looks like someone who has not fully settled into the NHL. If he decides to stay could rebound under a league min 1 year deal.

I'm not sure we'll ever get 100% of the details, but to me...these comments mean that it's ok for the Leafs to be BOTH the arsonist and the fire fighter. Are there assumptions, yes of course AND for the record, Kudos to the Leafs for getting these kids to keep signing. I'm not Mikko's agent. I'm indeed assuming both he and the Leafs signed this agreement with the intent that he'd be given a real shot at NHL ice time. Mikko chose the Leafs over every other team. Being a healthy scratch twice as much as playing is NOT a real shot in my opinion. Just because they traded him away doesn't mean starting the fire is ok. Again, Kudos to the Leafs! I'm just also surprised UFAs keep signing when you could be a healthy scratch twice as often as getting ice time. It doesn't seem like a smart move to me to ride the bench that much. But what do I know?
