If you guys give your 3C 5 mil a year your screwing yourselves financially. He is a 2C on weaker teams and. A 3 C on top teams I see him as a 3.5-4 mil a year max.
I really like him but he needs to put up 50+ points if he wants 5m+ a year

rather give him a 7th year and drop the AAV to 4.25-4.4...he gets his $30M and we save a decent amount on the cap hit

Thing is, he's not our 3C. He's the 2C for now, pretty much on par with Kotkaniemi. Is he gonna pass him eventually? Yeah, but he's still much needed for now. Heck, he shut down Crosby last playoffs and is MacKinnon's most difficult player to play against. He does put up 45+ points while being a top defensive center in the league.

I agree with you 100%, but...it's hard to argue he's a 3C when he's always played against the opponent's top C. I would have expected KK to surpass Danault now, but Danault is clearly outperforming him by a great margin. So I guess Danault is more of 2C than 1C

That’s signing him way past his quality years and for far too much. Am he will end up hurting you if you sign him for more than 5 years

No doubt he is a fantastic defensive Centerman! But He has to have Uber talented offensive wings to compensate for his lack of offense. I would love a player like him in San Jose! Just not for more than 4.25 a year

Look at Jean-Gabriel Pageau. Isles traded a first, second, and third for him then gave him 5M 6 years with a NTC. Phillip Danault is getting that in my opinion. Pageau is good, but not 5M good, and neither is Danault. You say people better put up 50+ points if they want that, but Pageau hasn’t. I know it’s a short season, but he’s not even on pace for that.

My gut tells me the number will be 7 x 4.75... That would be manageable because KK won't be getting much more than a bridge deal at ~3mil so once his deal is up and he's ready to be the 1-2 punch with suzuki, we could prob move Danault at 32 who would have 3yrs term left

he is 28, he will be somewhat quality until 33, maybe 34...4.25 *should be* next to nothing in 6 years

Can’t fault you for your knowledge and no doubt someone will give him a bigger longer deal.... but is that smart? Where the sharks smart for giving Karlsson 8 years 11.5??? It was longer term and more money than anyone else was a
Willing to give! Just cause someone is willing doesn’t make it wise.

Well and people thought 3.5/4 would be nothing by now but things change and it will be 2-3 years before the cap goes back up.
It wouldn’t be a stupid signing and I love the player but sometimes you have to look at the big picture and determine where that player fits and if that value fits his spot in the lineup... and if his contract will end up hindering you from signing bigger pieces or more vital pieces in the future.

Therein lies the connundrum with signing players. You don't always pay for what they *might* do going forward, but rather pay for what they have done alrdy...

I agree, but with what Pageau got, he is going to get that. It’s not wise at all, as it’s too much for them. Plus, the sharks should have never gave Karlsson 11.5M! That’s way too much. All I’m saying is that we can argue back and fourth, but the fact of the matter is, he is going to get a Pageau contract. I just hope it’s not my team that does it.

I’m not arguing! The sharks should have never done the Karlsson trade, and the double down and pay him like that for a shell of the player he once was was stupid.
And Canadiens should try and get Danault for less than 5mil and 5 years, use the cap crunch to your advantage.

I absolutely agree with what you just said. The sharks were not smart at all for giving Karlsson that much, and trading that much for him. He is 1 dimensional and has always been that way. Canadiens should try less, but if they really want him, they will have to give him a Pageau deal, even with the cap not going up.

I agree with this take. Tbh if Washington trades Kuzy, I could totally see them being in on Danault if he hits FA

Mi could see that but really Washington needs to find a sniper to take Ovechkins spot! He can’t keep
Passing up 30-50 goals a year like this into his 40’s

I'm so sick of this conversation... "DaNaUlt iS a 3c"

Danault is playing first line minutes, with first line wingers, against the other teams first line. EVERY GAME.

Nelson >= Danault > Pageau.

That means 5.5M-6M

(I really dont care if anyone think he is overpaid by 1M AAV)

That’s your opinion. Yes he is playing 1C... in no way would anyone consider him a prototypical 1C.
His actual placement would depend on each team but I would say 15 teams would have him 3C 10 would have him 2 C 3-4 have him at 1 C and 2-3 would have him a winger on the 2/3rd lines.
Say what you want throw your fit this is the truth

Isn't that generally what a 3C is for? To shutdown opponents 1st line?

Honestly, very good point, but not on good teams. If Matthews and McDavid are playing against one another, would either coach take away ice time from either of them in order to match-up? I don't think so.
Perhaps in the 90s we'd see guys like Carbonneau/Madden/Draper match up with #1s, but nowadays the teams that win are the ones that have #1s which can play against others.
Basically, Danault just isn't offensively capable enough to be considered a true #2 in my opinion. You can't "win" with him, he doesn't create enough. You can tie with him, or nowadays OT loss

He's a shutdown center that produces elite 5v5 scoring numbers. You can call him whatever you want, but for 5 Million that's a very good deal.

"Elite" ????!!!! How many goals does he have this season??? Elite???? Don't just through words around man. The guy can't score on any of his odd-man rushes, why? Cause he has NO SHOT. Elite??? I'm going to not get too mad, but this just drives me crazy. Yes, Montreal overhypes their own players sometimes, and this is an example.

It hasn't been his best year, but for the past few years, he's been one of the better 5v5 scorers.
