MTL would still suffer some cap penalty if Weber retires

Edit: NSH would take more however

Magically clear up that much cap space and this is the best you can come up with? Not even gonna get a starting goalie?

I think Primeau and Allen can split net evenly and be a good enough tandem. I'm more concerned about the Nurse trade - I'd love Nurse in MTL but this looks bad for EDM imo.

Weber won't retire when he still makes $6m next year. I don't think it will be a consideration until his final 3 years (two seasons from now).

have you watched the Habs this season? allen and primeau can get the job done. Plus, cant sign a goalie for 5-6 years cuz primeau is the future number 1

Absolutely not. Nurse is now a bonafide #1. No other Oilers' D will require a contract over 6 mil any time soon (if Barrie wants that, the Oil should be letting him go chase money elsewhere). Before his breakout this season I was worried Nurse would get more than say 7 mil. Now, I see 8mil as absolute fair value, especially with so many ELC's likely to feature during Nurse's big contract in support (Bouchard, Broberg, Samorukov etc.), and Klef still really cheap if he comes back (or off the books totally in LTIR).

What the Oil wouldn't be able to afford is tying up 9 mil in Drouin and Chiarot. Why does that make any sense if the suggestion is that Nurse at less than that combined total is "too expensive"?

I can't see us retaining 5 mil for 5 years on Price's contract, no team has even retained on long term deals for that much for obvious reasons. Also Nurse is worth more and Lehkonen will get more money while Ceci probably gets less

Doesn't really matter what Nurse wants. Oilers will be very happy just to keep for one year, rather than take on the multi year cap of 9m for both Drouin and Chariot. Take Drouin out of the trade, and the Oilers like the trade proposal a lot better.

If Weber retires both MTL and NSH suffer severe cap penalty’s, look at VAN and FLA for example with luongo

Have you not watched the blues every season Allen was there? He's a really good backup but his numbers aren't good when he's the starter.

I believe , though I could be wrong, but I believe that the cap recapture pentalty was a big part of the original Subban:Weber deal. The Canadiens' did not want to be on the hook for that penalty. Again, I could be wrong. Each trade is unique: I feel as though the Luongo trade structure was different, and that is why both teams were pentalized. Again: I could be wrong.

No matter what, this is a moot point, as Weber is a gamer and he's probably not retiring until 22/23 (when is actual salary is $3 million) or 23/24 (when is actual salary is $1 million).

Now, those years - 22/23 and 23/24 could potentially be seasons where I could see the Canadiens trading him to a team who could take on his cap. However, their cannot still be a flat-cap for that to happen (i.e. the salary cap has to rise significantly).
