Is Allen a goalie to build around? He's been struggling, and his development should be almost done. IMO, this is too much of a risk for Arizona to do.

Well he has and doesn't but for a team trying to save money and with no goalie depth long term, they don't have a ton of options. No big time goalie is gonna play behind this sorry lot.

Smith makes 5.6, and you want Arizona to retain .6 of that. Allen is going to make 4.3 mil next year. So the goalie position is only 700,000 saving for Arizona and they get a lesser goalie. And then you make Arizona take 4.35m stiff like Lehtera.? Bad hockey value for Arizona and bad economics too.

Palhal, Arizona could care less about the cap hit. It comes down to real dollars. Smith makes $6m next season and $5m the year after compared to $3.85 & 4.35m for Allen - that is a real $ saving of $2,800,000. Also, they are having a hard time moving Hanzal and with no depth at center they might as well take a guy like Lehtera who puts them closer to the cap floor and can help usher younger players (Strome, Domi, Dvorak) into centre roles.

Arizona has no trouble getting to the cap floor, but taking on other teams LTIR contracts or retired players that affect the cap. But Lehtera is real money.

They need a center who is older than the age of 23.
