Jim Benning fired and Im hired

Created by: LeafsFanZay
Team: 2021-22 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: May 5, 2021
Published: May 5, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Here is my explanation for every move:

Signing Savard: I feel like Quinn Hughes needs a mentor, he has really been trying to force plays, which are directly leading to turnover, and i think a guy like Savard would help Hughes get back to rookie-form again.

Signing Saad: Good idea to add a proven veteran middle-6 winger in case Podkolzin doesnt pan out

Signing Perry: Adding a veteran presence and a leader in the locker room

Signing Dubnyk: Adding a somewhat reliable goaltender behind Demko without a very big price tag (Mike Smith was also considered for the role)

Signing Bogo: Adding a low-cost, veteran defenseman to mentor the likes of Juolevi/Rathbone

Quinn needs a mentor? Four years of Savard is way too long as is 5m a year.

Yeah he clearly isn’t doing well. He’s struggle to produce at the NHL level lol

Well Quinn can produce offensively but he's poor defensively. Not that he can't get better, but geez I don't think four years of Savard is the solution. The Canucks have almost 18m in three veteran Dmen this season but they haven't help the Canucks or Quinn be successful. Canucks are like so many average to poor teams, too much cap spend players who aren't living up to their contracts.

I was being sarcastic. I think the Canucks had a down year and he’s still young. I think he’s incredible.

Throwing a bunch of money on older UFAs who are past their primes. I wonder where I've seen that before

It's funny how so many people can't stand Benning's signings yet think the solution is signing players to the same type of contracts that everyone hates.

Benning's 2nd half tenure is fine. Sure he's paying for his mistakes at the start of his tenure, but I've really liked what he's done lately.

This is far too long for Savard. Hughes has struggled, but so has everyone else. He should bounce back.

Signing Savard: I get the move but there are other veteran defence man you could choose. You're signing him to a 4 year $4.95M contract which is a little expensive for a guy like Savard that is out of his prime. Could help Quinn but look into other veteran defence man that could help.

Signing Saad: I get he can add to the bottom 6 but he's a guy at the back end of his career, with his cap hit being 5.5M. He's expensive and signing him to 4 years on a 5.5M contract when he's out of his prime doesn't make too much sense.

Signing Perry: This is a good signing, Corey Perry has a good hockey IQ he's really smart with and without the puck. His contract ain't bad either.

Signing Dubnyk: I agree with you Dubnyk is SOMEWHAT reliable but I don't think he would be a solid backup and get wins most times he starts.

Signing Bogo: Good

Savard: There really aren't many other veteran defenseman out there that can play 1st pair minutes like Savard can, and i will cut the term down to 2 years.

Saad: Saad is the only top-9 capable RW avaliable in free agency, and i think 5.5 is very realistic for him

Dubnyk: I only went with him cuz he would come at a cheap cost, I would've gone with Smith but i was scared he'd retire after this season

Saad is 28 years old. He's at the back end of his career, I don't think he has many years left in him. 5.5M is a lot don't ya think. I mean look at all the other guys in the bottom six. Most of them have to be really good to make upwards of 5M. I don't think Saad could bring a lot to the table

This team can't afford to pay 5.5m for a top 9 guy. We need cost effective middle six talent who can exceed expectations but not at an extreme financial value. Again, as I mentioned in a past comment, this seems like we are complaining about Jim's current signings but just replacing the holes with the exact type of solutions we've been complaining about. Saad probably gets that money somewhere else, but its a mistake to give him that here.

I'm interested in Janmark for such a role. I don't think his cap hit will be extreme, and he can fulfill many needs at a comparable level to Brandon.

Ultimately where this build falls short is giving Petey that contract. It's not realistic. That's about what I'd peg the high end of his bridge deal at.... his long term value starts in the 9ms. Adjusting for that, this roster neither is viable now or long term.
