Another attempt at Werenski

Description
Feedback was my last attempt was an overpay (https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/2362864)

Last time, I had offered two picks along with Zacha and Siegenthaler.
This time, I changed one of the 1sts to Gritsyuk and conditional 3rd.

(Gritsyuk is one of my personal favorite prospects in NJD system...but his history with Chinahkov seemed like an easy link)

  1. Werenski, Zachary
Additional Details:
Zacha - A 2c for Columbus and the best available center from the Devils. Currently our leading scorer with 33 pts in 47 gp. Was picked two spots before Werenski in 2015 draft, so also 23 years old.

Siegenthaler - just a replacement d-man. Was recent acquisition from Capitals.

Gritsyuk - Chinakhov's linemate from last season in Russian juniors (Gritsyuk had 63 pts to Chinahkov's 69 pts) and one of Russia's leading producers at this year's world juniors despite missing two games with injury. Can play center or wing. Kind of a boom or bust prospect.

2021 1st round pick (NYI)

2023 3rd round pick (becomes 2nd if Werenski finishes in top-5 of Norris voting in 2022 or 2023).

I mean, you're including Zacha as you say Hischier and Hughes are not available, but don't forget you're trading for a guy who's also likely not available. Siegenthaler is a depth defenseman, that Russian prospect is a big risk that likely doesn't hold much value and the first round pick belonged to a playoffs team.

You have to offer your own 1st + Zacha and Bahl for Werenski.

That’s because Hughes and Hischier are not available.
I would never fault anyone for asking though.

If the Blue Jackets were confident enough to take Chinahkov in 1st round as overager, I think they would know enough about Gritsyuk. And wouldn’t think he has no value. Risk, sure. But has amazing upside.

Isn't Zacha best suited as winger and not a C??
I mean he has won 3 FO in last 5 games.

I thought about that.
But a tad too much as both Bahl and that 1st could be top d-men for us.
Maybe if we got one of their picks back.

Very different player at wing and at center.
More defensive role at center.
A lot more offense from wing.
But a lot of that is

(A) difference between old system (Hynes) which used centers as basically 3rd d-men (triangles!) and new system (Ruff) which puts them into transition.

(B) Devils have depth a center (Hughes, Hischier, Sharangovich, Boqvist, Kuokkanen, McLeod, Merkley and earlier, Zajac) so everyone other than top-two have played wing this year.

It doesn’t mean he doesn’t play center.

I think he’s close to Chabot but Chabot is signed longterm. Not a chance I’d accept this for Chabot. Even if you changed the Isles 1st to the Devils 1st. So I’m not sure it’s enough for Werenski

If it’s the top-5 1st, then Gritsyuk stays.
And CBJ sends back a pick.

Look at the Devils defense.
We have Smith, Severson and a bunch of “could be” guys.
We need to add a top-4.

I never said Zacha couldn't play C, I said isn't he a winger.

If he was capable 2C, he would have more than 5 FO wins the last 5 games.

He is capable at center.
Just we have Hughes and Hischier in top-6.
Boqvist been 3C recently.
And McLeod at 4C most the year.
More useful to us keeping Zacha in top-6 as winger.

Sorry, but you don't seriously think that's all fair right? Werenski led the league in goals last year for dmen, is still young and is gonna maybe be a Norris contender for years. Cbj would counter with texier, knazko, tampas first and our 3rd for Hischier

You asked to change from #23rd overall to #4 overall and I said leave out Gritsyuk in that scenario.
Columbus would be getting Zacha, Siegenthaler, ~#4 overall and a 3rd / 2nd pick...

I think that is sizable offer, no?

How many teams have a spare center that would qualify as a 1C?

This argument is completely irrelevant because it assumes that a Werenski trade is a thing that has a significant possibility of happening.

For this post...its a "thing"
Just roll with it.

If Zacha is best center available...and CBJ take Devils 1st pick this year...what else would Columbus need in that scenario?

Zacha + 1st + ______?

Defensive prospect? Another forward? Another pick?

No. Because if we're not getting the #1C we need, we're not trading Werenski. You can't just arbitrarily declare otherwise. Or, alternatively, if you're going to declare otherwise, then we get to acquire Hischier for whatever extra players we want to offer as well.

Hischier or Hughes, because no scenario in which Zacha is the best center available will be accepted, no matter what. This is non-negotiable.

You can do that!
Make a post about what a fair Werenski deal to Devils would be.
You can say, "must include Hischier" or whatever declarations you'd like to make.
