Two trades for futures

Created by: mja
Team: 2016-17 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 14, 2017
Published: Jan. 15, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Despres reports directly to Robidas Island.

Stoner is your 8th D for the rest of the year and gets traded/buried/bought out in the summer.

ANA adds a winger with good cap value, gets out of cap hell and saves some real dollars by shedding Stoner/Despres.

Leafs use the picks to draft/trade for a stud Defenseman.

This line-up does what they can to make the playoffs this year.

As a sharks fan, can I be the first to say "Hell no" to that deal? Polak is a big part of the reason the Sharks lost in the final, he is not a good dman, and even with salary retained is not worth close to a 2nd rounder.

Terrible for Leafs....Now think. Let's acquired Mcillenery to play net instead of Bibeau. Why? To help Andersen and help the Leafs win. So it looks like Leaf management is making a true push to get in playoffs.
The trades....Desperes a meaningless addition to both sides. Stoner is not needed to be play LHD. And to say a late first rounder (Ducks) and later second rounder (Sharks) aren't going to get you a stud defenceman.
Polak, surprisingly has played well this season. He even appears to be "fast" by his standards at age 30. And he is needed by the Leafs to play RHD this season. So why would the Leafs trade two guys who they depend on play with the team. Kiss the playoffs hope good bye with this trade.

I'm not sure you can say claiming a backup goalie off of waivers means that they're making a playoff push. It could be looked at making an effort to have Andersen play less, so there's less of a chance he gets hurt

Krakowitz: Look at the Mcillernery waiver claim like this: If the Leafs were elevaluating Bibeau for his NHL ability they would have kept Bibeau in the NHL and played him once a week. Actually in his 2 NHL games, he has allowed a total of four goals, so it's not like he is incompetent. But the Leafs claimed 33 year McIllernery, a career backup. Why? He can help Anderssen prepare for games, probably be a good "practice goalie: since he has done it for so long in they NHL. What I was saying, the pickup of McIllernery was to immediately help this season, so yes it is playoff push, certainly by Leaf standards. End of February maybe we will be thinking differently.

By the way, last night in the battle for 3rd place in the Atlantic....Mcillernery first star of the game, Leafs win 4-2.
