Cause then someone will do this to Laf or Fox or Shesty or Chytil or Kakko or Kravtsov or Miller and the list goes on and on.

Fox will refuse to sign an OS. He loves NY

Still leaves another 4-6 quality players though. Plus given the sentiment around the Rangers in the league who wouldn’t love to screw us over if they could.

That’s a silly statement. Yes, he wanted to be in New York when every team was offering him the exact same contract. When he’s due to get a raise to 11 million, and the rangers have 4 to offer him, he’ll take 11.

So you think a team will offer him 11m but the Rangers will realistically offer him 4m? Or is that a dramatic example. 11 feels really high but I guess it’s possible.

So you may notice in the scenario above, the rangers are dishing out almost 11 million for a center. Of course, chytil will need double what is offered here, and the cap will remain flat. There isn’t room under that plan to give fox a reasonable offer, retain kakko, and ice a full roster.

I guess so but if teams aren’t tossing OS to guys like Barzel I doubt they toss OS offers to Fox and others. Even if they do NYR should learn from Nash and Weber. Don’t match it and let them deal with that ridiculous contract. OS are generally overpayments to begin w and if they aren’t they look like Aho and are easily matched. That was a no brainier

I was talking in general but In the Example above I would simply trade away Buchnevich rights for a cheaper player so your not spending 5.5m on a 3rd line winger. Imo you make Fox a priority over him

Fox should be their priority. Which means they aren’t signing Pettersson.

Fox definitely won’t get more than $8.5 mil on a 7-8 year deal. More than that would be ridiculous to me.

This is where rangers fans sound crazy. In one breath they’re saying he’s the best d man in the league, and in the next they’re saying he’ll get no more than $8.5MM. Those are mutually exclusive concepts.

Do you think fox is elite, or do you think he’s a chabot type player?

No other young d man makes more than Chabot. The guys at the position who make more were pending UFA’s not RFA’s. To me that makes a difference. But then again I’m the same one who doesn’t believe in paying guys till they have the individual or team hardware to prove it.

Well it’s the NHL that dictates what he gets paid, not you or me. There’s precedent for d men getting big tickets off their entry deal. Doughty getting 7x7 way back in the day when the cap was much much lower is a good example.

There also aren’t many d men that come off a three year entry deal with that kind of pedigree. For guys like fox and makar, it’s 8 figures to lock them up.

Unless you think fox is just another chabot, in which that’s a fair assessment. If you think he’s elite, 8.5 is crazy.

I love the guy and he is extremely important, but I think this next season will be very important in terms of his standing among the best defenseman in the league. Guys like Skjei and Ghost looked great their first few years before nosediving. I think I’d rather be a little more cautious and just make sure we know what we’ve got in him before his next contract becomes an anchor like Trouba who’s a legitimate waste of space at $8 million a year.

Sounds like a short term deal to me. 3x7 sounds reasonable. 8x8.5 is insanity.

I wouldn’t do 3x7. Looking at guys like Werenski or McAvoy I’d go 3x$6 mil max.

Mcavoy was a group 2 RFA. Completely different scenario, and not remotely comparable. Werenski couldn’t hold fox’s jock. This is what I’m talking about. Fox isn’t a werenski type guy. We know this. Rangers fans seem to know that when they’re raving about him, but somehow forget how good he is when it’s time to talk contract.

Well I guess it’s gonna come down to what he thinks he’s worth and what we’d be willing to pay him. Like if he wanted $10 mil that’d be utterly insane. At that point it’d let him sign the offer sheet and take the picks. No point in blowing up the cap on one player when you can’t ice a decent team around them.

He’s worth every penny of $10M. Number one d men don’t grow on trees. There’s like 6 of them in the league.

This is fine though. If you don’t think fox is elite, that’s totally okay. It doesn’t seem like you’re doing what is bothersome which is talking about how the player is the best player in the world while saying he shouldn’t be paid.

Also, worth noting, he’s probably going to win the Norris. That starts at 8 figures.

I’d honestly be shocked if they don’t give it to Hedman simply based on name recognition. No defenseman has ever won it with their team missing the playoffs and the only one to win one in their second year is Bobby Orr. Something tells me they won’t let that record be shared between Orr and Fox, which comes down to him not winning one.
