Hard no from NJ. It’s gonna cost the oilers a first to move Neal. Plus an extra mid to late first plus a b level prospect. Definitely a no from the Devils.

Yet, Backes who is worse then Neal was in a trade similar to this so I'll stick with NHL actual historic values. Backes (retained), B prospect, and late first for Kase (who was better then Wood at the time of the trade).

this would be a horrible deal for NJ. We can get a top 4 dman elsewhere for Wood

If Wood was on the Oilers, he would be 3rd in goals.

Not to mention, he's on a worse team and is getting 4th line minutes.

We could realistically get someone like Dumba for Wood and a 2nd/3rd

And what are u offering in this trade. Some crappy d prospect, a washed up scrub with a heavy cap, and a 1st rd pick in the worst draft in recent history. Wow, what a great trade

He is shooting like double his last 2 years SH% that will come back down. Are you saying he is on a much worse team and still getting 4th line minutes? Seems like a weird way to show a players value lol

He's playing on our 4th line and has 17 goals. Think thats pretty good

No you wouldn't. Try Wood, Prospect and NYI first for Dumba. Wood is a 3rd liner with a well above his average SH% this year

His shooting percentage is double is because he got a new trainer this offseason and has been working on his shot. He's on the 4th line because of chemistry. He's not on a team with Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl. Just showing how effective he is with less minutes and worse players around him

Offering the same value then the Ducks got in the Backes trade. If you think Samo is a ****ty D prospect when NJD have like the weakest D prospect pool in the league then enjoy the basement for a long time

Well that was a garbage trade for ANA. Any deal for Wood would have to include a top 4 dman or a package for a top 6 forward

Different cap environment. The flat cap and teams not planning for it increased the value of cap space...

Otherwise I'd agree with your argument.

Backes deal is not the comp to use.
Backes had 1.3 years left - and Bruins retained more salary. Ducks had to take $1.5m in cap for 2019-20 and $4.5m for 2020-21. So they got a 1st pick for ~$6m in cap.
Similar to Marleau deal.
Kase was returned for Axel Andersson.
Wood is better than Kase, while Axel and Samorukov are comparable.

Samorukov is a fringe prospect and the Devils have numerous d-men that are more promising

Bahl
Mukhamadullin
Walsh
Okhotyuk
Edwards

Samo is probably on par with Misyul and Vukojevich.

I'd think to make the Backes deal comparable....it would have to look like this:

Neal, $2.75 million retained ($6 million total over two years)
Samorukov
2021 1st pick

for

Andres Johnsson

It's a different cap environment and I believe Kase was seen as injury prone at the time as well. I don't think that his value at the time is as high as Wood's value is now. Wood also has a leadership role on the team so I don't see NJ giving him the same value that Kase had with the Ducks.

Neal's playing better now that he's recovering from Covid. It hit him really hard before camp and he couldn't get back in shape. If you did want to get rid of his contract a buyout is 1.9 mil, and won't cost a 1st. and if it does I'd pass. Samorukov is a highly regarded prospect and I wouldn't trade him to dump 2 years of a bad contract. People who are saying he's a fringe prospect have never seen him play, he'll be in the NHL in 2 years and will be a second pairing anchor in 4.
