You don't want to pay Copp.. but you give 5M to Saad. Seems like an odd choice especially when you aren't even trying to trade Copp who could probably get you Severson

Severson isn't available. He was playing amazing before he got Covid. He has slowed down towards the end of the season (due to covid) but he is still the Devils second best defensemen. Plus, he's a great leader. I don't see the Devils moving him any time soon.

It's close. I would give the slight edge to Smith with Smith improving defensively throughout the season. If Severson didn't get covid, he would be 1st

Brendan Saad is really overrated. For four straight years he hasn't cracked 50 points/50 point pace. He is a decent goal scorer. But you are signing him for term when he's already going to be 29.

Doesn’t make sense for Devils to trade Severson and not get Heinola (or another prospect d-man plus) back.
He is too valuable to this team.

And personally, I’d say he is, without question, our #1 guy on the ice. Smith is more valuable long term, but isn’t a number-one all-situations guy yet.

That's one terrible contract for Saad and an overpay for Severson. The Jets would likely have no interest in Saad, especially at that cost, but would have interest in Severson. However, I don't know why Jersey would move Severson.

Jersey has to decide if they're going to try to compete this year. Otherwise I'd trade him this year just like Anaheim flirted with trading rackell all year. He's a Ufa in two years so will get a lot more value in a trade this summer.

If they want to try to compete or if he was signed a few years longer certainly keep.
