I’m gonna say rangers just because he’s more cost controlled. I would think 1for 1 would be close not sure if NYR adds or not. To me, I think they play similar. That’s just me. I don’t watch either often though so maybe take my take with a grain of salt

Tkachuk is to important to our core to trade him for a unexperienced winger. I wouldn't trade him unless it is originally a massive win for Flames

Lafreniere has tons of potential, and was just starting to get his feet under him at the end of the Season.

Kind of a bad look to be gifted the Top Prize of the Draft class, that you really had no business obtaining, and then decide you're done with him after 56 games.

Both teams say no. Lafreniere has the potential to be a franchise forward, he will get every opportunity to develop. Tkachuk is the real core of the Flames franchise right now.

Both would say no.

Calgary would be slightly stupid to say no but it wouldn’t surprise me that they would.

I’ve said it many times and I’ll say it again, trading Laf would be such a huge mistake.

Calgary 100% says no. Lafreniere probably has the higher talent ceiling, but even if he becomes an 80-90 point player, i still think all of tkachuk’s intangibles will likely make him more valuable. Then you have to factor in the chance that lafreniere doesn’t pan out.

Im interested in your thinking process on this one.

As rookies

LAF is on a 30 point pace in an 82 games season
MT was on a 52 point pace in an 82 game season

So at 18-19 MT had the better season. lol I mean they would be slightly stupid to say no? Then you have to assume that Everything goes to plan with Laf and he doesn’t end up looking like a KK. He’s still young and can easily become elite but MT is also young and has proven he’s a high level talent. I don’t see why the Flames just give up the better player for an unproven asset.

Proven asset > unproven. It’s not like they are trading him for a 2nd round pick. MT is an amazing talent

He is the proven 1st overall pick... The ceiling difference is massive.
Its not 4 quarters or a dollar. Its more like "You can have $5 now or if you wait you can have $10."

The trade would be a massive L for NYR in 5 years

So was Yak he was a 1st overall and call Laf $10 in the future and MT $5 now would lead you to believe he’s 2x the player when maybe he’s $6-$7in the future.(if everything goes right) Unless you think Laf is a 90-100 point guy

I know what I am giving up, but also know what I am getting back. And I am trying to find deals that fit Dolan's mandate for Drury, which is (a) more toughness, grit and fewer skilled guys and (b) more urgncy to win now as opposed to building slowly over time.

It is more like this:
Option 1: You have $2 today. It has 1-in-4 chance that it turns into $15 in the future. 1-in-4 chance it becomes $9, 1-in-4 chance of $6. And 1-in-4 chance of staying at $2.
Option 2: You could have $8 today, which has 1-in-3 chance to be $10 in the future, 1-in-3 chance in stays at $8 and 1-in-3 chance it slips to $6.

Both have present value of $8.

I had a feeling you were gonna bring up Yakapov. lol
The difference an elite player can make above an average 1st line player is enormous which is why I used the 5 to 10 analogy.
You can debate the exact value.

Listen, I hear your point, but taking the "proven" player in a situation like this is a formula for missing out on a top player.

Here is an example I'll never forget that is of course unique but offers some similarities...

I once debated with someone who thought the Leafs should trade Matthews to avoid having to pay him huge $ after his ELC.
The mock trade suggested was: OEL, Domi, Strome, 1st rounder for Matthews.
At the time, OEL was pretty dominant, Domi was young and had a similar (just similar, relax) offerings as Tkachuk with a blend of skill and snarl, Strome was a future top line centre.

Looking at the trade now it looks ridiculous, but at the time there was huge debate saying the Leafs would have to consider...

I apologize for the long story, but its an example of people being short sighted with young players. Matthews was good, but he wasn't point per game, people questioned his health, etc...

Fair enough, I personally think that would be
A) An overreaction to the last few games, trading a potential superstar for a chance to get "tougher"
B) A short-sighted perspective to make that move

now do you believe Matthews would be a 50g 90+point guy playing in AZ or does he directly benefit from the players surrounding him... like playing with Marner

Of course Marner helps, two good players that have chemistry/synergy and make each other better, but if you watch Matthews, you realize that he scores with whoever he plays with and in so many different ways. He is also and underrated playmaker and his assist totals are severely deflated because his linemates don't score at a high clip.
Even in Arizona, I would wager Matthews is still an 85-100 point guy playing with Keller, Garland, etc...
