Description
I’ve noticed a lot of very declarative, or absolute statements about players based on their performance this season. I would kind of warn against that. This was a really weird year. A lot of players had their off-seasons interrupted, and it was short. There was no pre-season. Professional athletes are creatures of habit, and completely disrupting the schedule of an NHL season could really effect some players.

Maybe it’s just what the player is. I’m not saying Fox isn’t awesome. This could just be his natural progression, but I wouldn’t bank on it. Maybe Chyrchrun is a .75 point per game D man or whatever he’s at, but I’m not there yet. Maybe Laine doesn’t stink (I think he does). Maybe Matthews isn’t a goal per game mutant.

LW is underperforming outliers, RW is over performing outliers. Leave yours in the comments and I’ll add them.

Eichel underproforming? He's been injured most of the season.

I don't think Fox belongs. Truth is he had an outstanding year last season too with better underlying numbers than both Makar and Hughes in a lot of places. He got lost behind those 2 in the Calder trophy talk because of the points they were putting up but he was right there with them in terms of impact. To be competing with the top defenseman along with Makar now isn't really a step up, its just a continuation of what he's shown so far.

Right away I'll give my disclaimer of bias for obvious reasons, but Adam Fox only has two seasons under his belt. I don't know if you can call 2021 an outlier for him that quickly.

Debrusk isn't an outlier, this is the second year of serious regression in a 4 year career, that's as far from an outlier as you can get.

And when he played, he underperformed.

Heiskanen really didn’t have his best season this year, after all he went trough last year being our best player in the playoffs, this situation really took a toll on him.

It’s an outlier season. Whether you think its natural progression or not. Pretty big jump.

And my point is I don't think it's fair to label someone's 2nd career NHL season an outlier that quickly, like how you can't call someone a bust after his 1st.
Again, I'm biased though and others could disagree. Not trying to say it's definitive natural progression either.

I guess if it was a smaller jump, I’d be inclined to agree with you. But when a player goes from quite good, to Norris conversation in a year as weird as this one, I’m going to raise an eyebrow, and wait until next year to make that kind of judgment. That’s certainly not to say this isn’t just who he is, but just like I’m giving players having an off year the benefit of the doubt, I’m going to be a bit suspicious of massive jumps like his.
