Description
Very fun draft here. This is just my first round mock with descriptions. Hope you enjoy!
ROUND 1TEAMORIGINALPLAYERDETAILS
1Logo of the Buffalo Sabres-Beniers is really just the best fit for the Sabres. Beniers would likely be their 2C behind Eichel, but if they trade Eichel in the offseason, then that opens the door for Beniers to fight for 1C. Beniers plays a well rounded two-way game but what stands out most to me his speed. He comes blazing down the ice, fooling defenders with his nasty hands. Beniers is always well positioned and when he has a shooting lane, he makes no mistake. The Sabres will definitely benefit from having an all around great player like Beniers on their team. Beniers is always full of energy and I think he would be a great leader for the Sabres. C-University of Michigan-NCAA-24GP 10G 14A 24PTS.
2Logo of the New Jersey Devils-Hughes bros time. At this point, I really can't go without seeing the Devils taking Hughes if he's available at their pick. They could use some young blood to compliment Smith and Mukhamadullin on the blueline. Hughes can do it all on defense and he is a great powerplay quarterback. He might have the highest upside in the draft as he has both the size and the skill to be something quite special. He is a great skater too. Hughes projects to be a top pair defenseman on the Devils. I would love this pick for New Jersey because I think Luke Hughes can improve a lot more playing with his brother, Jack. LHD-USNTDP-38GP 6G 28A 34PTS.
3Logo of the Seattle Kraken-I think Guenther is a great payer for Seattle to start their franchise with. He is an offensive power house and great at driving plays. Guenther has an elite shot, great skill, and he is extremely quick on his skates. Guenther just has so much great offensive ability. I believe that he can definitely become a top line winger in the NHL and he will be a great pick for Seattle. RW-Edmonton Oil Kings-WHL-12GP 12G 12A 24PTS.
4Logo of the Anaheim Ducks-Eklund will give the Ducks some help on offense. Other than Zegras, the ducks don't have much high end talent up front, so Eklund would fix that. It would be super exciting to see Eklund and Zegras playing on a line together. Like Guenther, Eklund has a ton of high-end offensive talent, but what stands out to me is his great hands and puck skills. And with his great performance in the SHL this season, the points have came. LW-Djugardens IF-SHL-40GP 11G 12A 23PTS.
5Logo of the Ottawa Senators-The Senators have one of the best prospects pools in the league, so they can't go wrong with taking the best player available in Brandt Clarke. They don't take Power here because I think Clarke is the better fit for the Sens. Clarke has great hockey sense and a great two-way game. He is a great powerplay quarterback and in my opinion, he projects to be a #1 defenseman. Though he seems to be all over the board in most draft rankings, he had a stellar U18 world juniors performance so far, so I think he is worthy of a top 5 pick. He is a very exciting prospect and as a bonus, he is an RHD which are seemingly hard to find nowdays. Clarke is often compared to Aaron Ekblad in terms of style of play. With Clarke in the mix, the Sens future defensive corps could look like: Chabot-Clarke, Sanderson-Bernard Docker, Brannstrom-Thomson. I love this pick for the sens, and Clarke will add to their already great future. RHD-HC Nove Zamky-Slovakia-26GP 5G 10A 15PTS.
6Logo of the Columbus Blue Jackets-A bit of an off the board pick here, but the Jackets are desperate for a future 1/2C. Sillinger happens to be the best pure center available. They don't take Johnson here because he projects to be more of a winger at the NHL level. Sillinger can help fix the Blue Jackets scoring problem as he has one of the best shots of the draft. He loves having the puck on his stick, but tends to be a bit lazy off the puck. His skating has some room for improvement, but there are not many crazy good skaters in this draft anyways. If he works on his skating though, he can be an elite talent. This season, Sillinger has been racking up some big numbers for Sioux Falls in the USHL. C-Sioux Falls Stampede-USHL-31GP 24G 22A 46PTS.
7Logo of the Los Angeles Kings-The Kings get help on defense. They are already pretty loaded when it comes to the forward group with Byfield, Turcotte, Vilardi, and Kupari, so I thinks its clear that they should take a defenseman here. Its a shame they couldnt get Clarke to help out on the right side, but this is a steal to take Power at 7. Most scouts have him ranked at #1, so I can't see him falling any further than here. Power is a big two-way defender with a very well rounded game. I mean, you really can't point out any flaws with this guy. Power should end up becoming at least a top pair defender. He is very frequently compared to Victor Hedman. Power makes smart plays in the offensive zone and uses his big frame to his advantage when playing defense. LHD-University of Michigan-NCAA-26GP 3G 13A 16PTS.
8Logo of the San Jose Sharks-I know the Sharks often avoid taking goalies, but I think they gotta take Wallstedt here. They have Melnichuk and Korenar rising up the depth chart, but I don't think either of them have that true starter potential. Wallstedt is being compared to guys like Vasilevskiy. He really has the superstar goalie potential. He uses his big frame to his advantage in nets and makes great high danger saves. If the Sharks take Wallstedt here, they will not have to worry about goaltending for many years to come. He's been playing great in the SHL this season. G-Lulea HF-SHL- 22GP 12-10-0 GAA 2.23 SV% .908.
9Logo of the Vancouver Canucks-BPA pick here for the Canucks. You could argue they take a center like Lucius, but the top 6 would be hard to crack with Pettersson and Horvat down the middle. Edvinsson is a big strong Swedish defenseman. He has smooth skating and some great offensive ability. So far, he's made a splash in the U18 world juniors with his great offensive awareness. In many ways, Edvinsson is very similar to Power. I like his style of play and I think he would be a great fit on the Canucks. LHD-Frolunda HC-SHL-10GP 1A 1POINT.
10Logo of the Detroit Red Wings-Stevie Y with the sneaky off the board pick. Yzerman is known for off the board steals like this. Svozil isn't necessarily ranked this high, but I think he would definitely be a guy Yzerman is interested in come draft time. Svozil can be the LHD they've been looking for to play with Seider in the future. Svozil is more of a defensive defenseman, but is great on the attack too. Svozil is great at moving the puck in the offensive zone and he is just a treat to watch play. I love his style of play and I definitely think he could become a valuable piece on the blueline in 2-3 years. LHD-HC Kometa Brno-Czech-30GP 1G 2A 3PTS.
11Logo of the Calgary Flames-The Flames take BPA here while filling a whole in the lineup at the same time. They really need a crafty showstopper guy like Johnson. He is very creative and he has probably the highest upside in this draft class. Johnson can really make your jaw drop and he can make some insane plays. He is listed as a center, but projects to be a winger at the NHL level. I think I'd call Johnson a human highlight reel. LW-University of Michigan-NCAA-26GP 9G 18A 27PTS.
12Logo of the St. Louis Blues-Lysell is a great playmaking winger with amazing puck handling ability and speed. He is a huge offensive threat anytime he has the puck on his stick. The Blues take Lysell here because he is the BPA and the Blues just don't have any really good prospects. A bonus here is that Lysell has double eligibility to play on both wings though he plays on the right more often. In the world juniors Lysell has kept the ball rolling continuing the stellar play with some insane highlight reel goals. Lysell can really help out the Blues future. RW-Lulea HF-SHL-26GP 2G 1A 3PTS.
13Logo of the Arizona Coyotes-
Draft Pick Forfeited
14Logo of the Chicago Blackhawks-Here the Blackhawks take a local legend in Coronato. Not far from the United Center, Coronato has been tearing it up with the Chicago Steel night in and night out. He is just such and offensive powerhouse and a great play driver. Coronato has a deadly wrister and is just such a tough guy to play against. If he picks up the tempo of his game he can be a huge threat at the NHL level. I believe Coronato would be a great fit with the Blackhawks. This is yet another future star that the Chicago Steel have developed. Coronato is a very special player and I'm sure the Blackhawks would love to have him on their team. LW-Chicago Steel-USHL-51GP 48G 37A 85PTS.
15Logo of the Philadelphia Flyers-Here the flyers take the most established sniper in the draft. They could really use a guy who they can just always depend on to light the lamp (when he's not injured). He makes smart plays and loves to steal the show. Lucius already has an NHL level shot with a great release, but sometimes his game may be a bit too flashy for my liking. I think his amazing shot is too much for the Flyers to pass up here, so I definitely think they should take him if he's on the board at this pick. C-USNTDP-12GP 13G 5A 18PTS.
16Logo of the Montreal Canadiens-The Canadiens have had a bit of a center problem for the last few years, so McTavish can help them out in fixing that. He can really play either center or wing, but if the Canadiens take him here I'd expect they try him out on center. McTavish is a pure goal scorer with an outstanding shot. He is sort of like Lucius just to a slightly lower degree in my opinion. McTavish has great vision and a knack for finding the back of the net. He's been one of the most fascinating players on team Canada to watch in the world juniors. Skating could use a few touch-ups, but once he gets that down he will become a complete offensive juggernaut. I definitely think McTavish would be a great fit on the Canadiens. C/W-EHC Olten-SL-13GP 9G 2A 11PTS.
17Logo of the Dallas Stars-The Stars desperately need a solid RHD in their system, so they take Ceulemans here. He can be a good sturdy partner for Harley in the future. Ceulemans has top 4 D potential, but would likely play on the top pair with the stars once Klingberg fizzles out. He loves to tear up and down the ice and jump in on the rush. Ceulemans is a powerhouse defenseman. He can really just do it all and has the size to go along with his intriguing style of play. He's really proven himself and put his name out there with his great play at the world juniors. I think Ceulemans is definitely a guy that the Stars would be interested in at the draft. RHD-Brooks Bandits-AJHL-8GP 4G 7A 11PTS.
18Logo of the Nashville Predators-I don't think the Preds are looking to add anything specific at the draft, so I have them just taking the best player available in Sasha Pastujov. He is an all around great offensive winger. Pastujov is a specialist on the power play and it seems as if nothing can stop him from putting up points like a madman. He is great a crashing the net and picking up the loose puck on a rebound. Sasha is very intelligent and thinks the game well. His skating is a bit off par compared to the rest of his game, but if he works on that, I think he can transfer all of his great offensive instincts and skills over to the pro level. I could definitely see Pastujov becoming a great 2nd line winger for the Preds. LW-USNTDP-40GP 29G 35A 64PTS.
19Logo of the New York Rangers-I'd have the Rangers taking either Raty or Pinelli here, and given Raty's inconsistency, I think they're better off with Pinelli. The Rangers have had a pretty significant center problem for quite a while now. They just have nothing big lined up for the future down the middle. As Zibanejad ages, I could see Pinelli as the primary 1C, but rotating with Strome. Pinelli is absolutely CLINICAL on special teams. He is great at killing penalties and capitalizing on powerplays which i like most about his game. Pinelli has smooth hands and he is great at driving plays. Pinelli is personally one of my favorite prospects in this draft. I just really like the way he thinks the game. He is extremely consistent and is a guy who you can always depend on. Pinelli is what I would call a complete center. And besides, how can the rangers not take him here? He played on the Kitchener Rangers last season. C-HDD Jesenice-AlpsHL-13GP 5G 6A 11PTS.
20Logo of the Edmonton Oilers-I think the Oilers are the team who pull the trigger on Cossa. They have one of the worst goaltending tandems in the league. At this point, I've came to the conclusion that Koskinen sucks and Smith might retire in the offseason. They have Stuart Skinner as a solid goaltender prospect, but I don't think he has the potential to become a starter. Cossa can become a true No. 1 goalie for the Oilers. Cossa has great size for a goaltender standing at 6'6 and 215 pounds and he is a guy who you can lean on night in and night out. He makes great high danger saves and does all of the little things right. Cossa has been rising up my rankings a ton recently with his stellar performance in the WHL so far this season. And he's been playing right in their backyard this season, so that's yet another reason the Oilers would be interested in selecting Cossa here. G-Edmonton Oil Kings-WHL-16-1-1 GAA 1.66 SV% .937.
21Logo of the Winnipeg Jets-I think its clear that the Jets deperately need defense, so they take the best defenseman available. Lambos has some great speed, skill, and strength. he plays a pretty well rounded game as a defensive defenseman. I sometimes like to compare him to a lower degree of Jaccob Slavin. He can help bolster the Jets defense to match their already great forward group. Though he is a sturdy and strong defender, he has been falling a lot recently. I think the Jets are the right team to select him though. Though he has sat out a lot of games this season due to injury, Lambos has been playing in Winnipeg for the Winnipeg Ice, so he is probably no stranger to the scouts. I just think Lambos would be overall a great fit on Winnipeg. LHD-Winnipeg Ice-WHL-2GP 0PTS.
22Logo of the Boston Bruins-Here the Bruins take the best player available because in the last few years, they have been contending and trading a way their first round picks, so I think they just go with the best player available in Stankoven to help out their prospect pool a bit. I think would be a great fit for the Bruins and they would love to have him there. I think he has some good top 6 winger potential for the Bruins to take the spot of a guy like Marchand once he retires. Stankoven is an elite sniper and he plays his game at an upbeat pace with the engines always revving. Though he is considered undersized at 5'8 he gets down in the dirty areas and has a strong physical game. When you think about it, it seems like Stankoven can score from literally any where on the ice. We've seen some pretty insane shots from him. I think he's definitely up there with Lucius and Sillinger with one of the best shots of the draft. If Stankoven ends up left on the board when the Bruins are picking, he will be hard to pass up. LW-Kamloops Blazers-WHL-6GP 7G 3A 10PTS.
23Logo of the New Jersey DevilsLogo of the New York IslandersDevils take Robertsson here for the Swedish connection on the wings and help for Jack and Nico. Both Robertsson and Holtz are listed as left handed right wings, but I think one of them would likely end up switching to the left. If the Devils take Robertsson here, that would fill out their future top 6 of Hughes, Hischier, Robertsson, Holtz, Mercer, and Foote. Robertsson has an amazing shot and release, so he could definitely be the finisher for Hughes or Hischier. He makes defenders look foolish with his quick speed. Robertsson works hard and puts a lot of effort in his game, so I definitely think the Devils would want to take him here. RW-Skelleftea AIK-SHL-22GP 1G 1A 2PTS.
24Logo of the Columbus Blue JacketsLogo of the Tampa Bay LightningHere the Blue Jackets get insurance at the center position while also taking one of Jarmo's fellow Finns. Not the safest pick here as Raty would be a bit of a project, but if Columbus develops him right, he could turn out to be a solid middle 6 center. Raty plays a strong well rounded 200-foot game with good skills, but one of my biggest problems with him is that he lacks consistency. If Raty had kept up his consistency this year in the Liiga, he would have been a lot higher in this mock. But overall, I think this is the right pick for Columbus here. C-Karpat-Liiga- 35GP 3G 3A 6PTS.
25Logo of the Minnesota WildLogo of the Pittsburgh PenguinsHere the wild get some youth to add to the D core. They currently have a very strong defense right now, but there isn't much lined up for the future. Behrens is a great offensive defenseman with great Hockey IQ and offensive awareness. He has proven that when he gets an opportunity, he makes the most of it. In the World Juniors, Luke Hughes was out with an injury, that meant Behrens would get a lot more ice time and responsibility. He stepped right up to the challenge, posting 4 points in 5 games and setting up some amazing plays. This shows that he could probably step up and be the quarterback to a line with Kaprizov, Boldy, or Rossi on it. Behrens is great up top on the powerplay and he can be put to use for his fullest potential with the Wild. LHD-USNTDP-46GP 7G 28A 35PTS.
26Logo of the Columbus Blue JacketsLogo of the Toronto Maple LeafsWith this pick, Columbus adds some depth on defense behind Werenski and Jones. Chayka is definitely more of a defensive defenseman. He has good reach and vision, and his big frame helps him create more space for himself and box out the opponent. Chayka is very quick and makes no mistakes in his own end. I think he can be a solid 2nd pair defender for the Blue Jackets and get some time on the penalty kill. I could see him getting a crack at the powerplay as well if he puts some of his offensive tools together. Chayka lacks physicality a bit, but makes up for it with his great hockey sense. I think Chayka would be just an all around great fit for the Blue Jackets. LHD-CSKA Moskva-KHL-11GP 1G 1A 2PTS.
27Logo of the Minnesota Wild-Here the Wild take the best player available. Bourgault has solid top 6 potential and he can play center and wing. He plays a very skilled, offensive minded game, but the things that stand out most to me about Bourgault are his great ability to move the puck and his vision. He uses his amazing vision to his advantage to find a lane to rip the puck in the back of the net. I think Bourgault plays a similar game to fellow top prospect Kent Johnson with his inevitable skill and creative style of play. If the Wild use Bourgault as a center, they will have their center problem all patched up with Rossi, Bourgault, and Eriksson Ek. The wild would be interested in taking Bourgault here because he adds more of a show-stopping Kaprizov element to the team. C/RW-Shawinigan Cataractes-QMJHL-29GP 20G 20A 40PTS.
28Logo of the Detroit Red WingsLogo of the Washington CapitalsSince the Red Wings went off the board with their first pick, its important they take the best player available here. It also wouldn't kill the Red wings to get another winger prospect. Chibrikov has great speed and strength. He is insanely fast and has a crazy effort level. Chibrikov's playmaking ability is off the charts and his shot is like the cherry on top. He would fit great as a 2nd line winger with a guy like Vrana or Veleno. The effort level that Chibrikov brings is infectious and he makes his teammates best players. I think Chibrikov can become a great leader too with the red wings and potentially even earn himself an 'A' on his sweater. RW-SKA St. Petersburg-KHL-16GP 1G 1A 2PTS.
29Logo of the Colorado Avalanche-Avs take BPA here. Svechkov would add some more pizazz to the Avalanche. He has a great offensive skillset and dazzling hands. Svechkov is very confident with the puck on his stick and loves to drive the bus on offense. He has risen so much recently and you could even argue he should be way higher here and I wouldn't disagree. Svechkov actually plays a particularly interesting 2-way game. He is great in transition and breakouts too which I think will help the Avalanche. I think when he really proved that he was the real deal was at the u18 world juniors where he put up 10 points in 7 games with some lights out goals. Svechkov is just an all around beast and he can really help out the Avalanche anywhere on the ice with his strong 200 foot game. C-Ladia Togliatti-MHL-15GP 4G 11A 15PTS.
30Logo of the Florida Panthers-Here the Panthers grab a good 2-way defenseman. I think they should definitely take a defenseman here after taking Lundell, Knight, Denisenko, and Tippett in the first round over the past 4 years. I think it would be nice for them to have a good puck moving guy like Hreschuk who isn't afraid to shoot. Hreschuk make smart plays and he is always ready. He reads the game well and knows where the puck and his teammates are going. Though he had a little bit of a setback in the u 18 world juniors, in my eyes, he is still a very reasonable pick for the Panthers here in the late first round. LHD-USNTDP-50GP 6G 31A 37PTS.
31Logo of the Carolina Hurricanes-Scott Morrow is the perfect pick for the Canes here. The Hurricanes need an RHD, more specifically a mobile RHD. Morrow is just that. I would love if we could get Morrow here. He plays a great 200-foot game and has some outstanding offensive tools. Morrow is great on his edges and has a smooth stride. He also has great size, so he will be hard to pass up. I can't go without the Canes taking a defenseman this year. We desperately need any sort of D prospect. Morrow, in my opinion, is one of the most exciting prospects in this draft. He has a high upside that can help his case in getting picked in the first round. Morrow is really just the best option for the Canes here. RHD-Shattuck St. Mary's-USHS Prep-30GP 8G 40A 48PTS.
32Logo of the Vegas Golden Knights-Vegas with the BPA pick to finish off the first round. They don't seem to have much in terms of high end prospects, so I think BPA is the safest route. L'Heureux is one of the more interesting players of this draft class. He seems to be all over everyone's rankings and he sort of has a Max Domi style of play. He is basically a pest with skill. Like Domi, at times he can surprise you in the offensive zone. He just seems to turn on the jets sometimes and prove what he's worth. Though a bit inconsistent, I think L'Heureux still has the play driving ability to make the cut for the first round. Discipline has been an issue with L'Heureux, but if the Knights can get him to smarten up his behavior, he will be looking like even more of an offensive threat. This pick is certainly interesting to say the least. LW/C-Halifax Mooseheads-QMJHL-33GP 19G 20A 39PTS.

They're both great options. They could take Lysell because he had an INSANE world juniors, but Johnson was also amazing with Michigan this season. I was torn, but I picked Johnson because I think he had ore success in the regular season than Lysell, but they are both very close.

Am I misunderstanding how the lottery works? I thought only picks 1 and 2 were involved so that would mean the Ducks would pick 3 here, or does that change not go into effect until next years draft? Or is SEA guaranteed a top 3 pick

It comes into effect this year. I just did top 3 because I wanted to explain what could happen if Seattle got a top 3 pick.

I didn't study this years draft, but Dallas's need is either a playmaking winger to play with Gurianov or a RHD to help our depth.

Yep. That's why I have them taking Ceulemans. A winger wouldn't be bad either.

So how do you propose that Detroit drops to #10 overall? Detroit currently sits at #6 overall. Even if Vancouver passes them and drop them to #7 they can't finish any worse then #8 or #9 since you can only drop 2 spots not 3 spots.

I started this quite a while ago when the pick odds were different. Detroit was slotted for pick 10 at the time.

LOL now i know, You've team finishing in spots that they can't finish in. San Jose, LA and Ottawa can only get 1,2 or where they finish and under. Where you've those 3 teams picking from is impossible. Look at Tankathon for the correct odds.

LOL now i know, You've team finishing in spots that they can't finish in. San Jose, LA and Ottawa can only get 1,2 or where they finish and under. Where you've those 3 teams picking from is impossible. Look at Tankathon for the correct odds.

These were the pick odds at the time I started this mock as I previously said.

@Dzinger18 with another great mock draft!

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if Columbus goes off-the-board. They did it last year and in 2018.

Also it is rumored that Dorion has drawn interest in Clarke. So I'm pretty sure Ottawa will 100% take Clarke if he's available.

I think the devils go with Clarke imo. They need a right shot right side young defensemen but if they go with Hughes I won't be upset.

I did consider Clarke as an option, but I had to go Hughes there because Jack and Luke together would be lethal. Clarke isn't a bad option though. He looked great in the U18 world juniors.

1. I didn't think Power deserved to be in the top 5 over any of the guys that were already there.
2. I have Ottawa taking Clarke because I heard Dorion was interested in him. He is super underrated. I'd be fine with Ottawa taking a forward at 5, but if Clarke is on the board, I think he is the more reasonable selection there.

Yo I know I've hit you up before, but I really think you should consider joining the GM Game on CapFriendly. I'm the Quebec GM and we have tons of draft picks this year and I really think you can be a great asset to our team and game. It's basically a multiple year long Arm-Chair GM where we make trades, free agency, draft, and having sophisticated scoring for our game. If you could reply to this one way or another if you're interested that would be awesome. Like I said, really think you'd be a great addition to the game.
